Deedee Corradini Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 2, 2015.

DEEDEE CORRADINI
April 11th, 1944 – March 1st, 2015

"I was born on April 11, 1944 in Providence, RI, the second child of Marie-Louise and Horace McMullen. From ages 4 to 15, my family and I lived in the Middle East, first in Beirut, Lebanon, where my father, a theologian and minister, was President of the Near East School of Theology and I attended the American Community School. Then we were in Aleppo, Syria, where he was President of Aleppo College. I made lifelong friends and became fluent in French and Arabic.

I attended Drew University from 1961-63, where I met and married Paul Robert Corradini. We moved to Utah after falling in love with the mountains. We had visited my parents there after they relocated for my father to become the pastor of Holladay United Church of Christ. I received a Bachelors degree in Psychology from the University of Utah in 1965, then a Masters in Educational Psychology in 1967. Paul and I had two wonderful children. Although we divorced in 1973, we remained close throughout our lives.

With an early passion for politics, I served as Press Secretary to Congressman Wayne Owens (D-Utah) and Rep. Richard Ottinger (D-NY) in early 1970's. This led to a great desire to serve the public, which I was honored to do from 1992-2000 as the first, and to date, only female Mayor of Salt Lake City. There are two things of which I was most proud from my tenure as Mayor: The first was bringing TRAX light-rail to the city, allowing a more modern and eco-friendly transportation system for the public. It has been extraordinary to see TRAX continually expanding, which has enabled Salt Lake City the potential to become the innovative, world-class city it deserves to be.

The second was winning the bid for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. I held such a great love for Utah, its mountains and its people, and I wanted to share that with the world. I will never forget the moment I received the Olympic Flag during the Closing Ceremonies from the International Olympic Committee President Juan Antonio Samaranch during the 1998 Winter Games in Nagano, Japan.

It was also an honor to represent all of the nation's mayors by serving as the President of the United States Conference of Mayors, both on the national and international front.

In 1998 during a Renaissance Weekend on Hilton Head Island, SC, I met my partner in life and love, John Huebner, a charming Southerner from Greenville, SC, with whom I went head to head on a panel titled "The Changing Relationships Between Men and Women." We married a year later. I have enjoyed a wonderful and fulfilling 16 years with him by my side, both travelling the world, and living in our home in Park City, sitting on the deck watching the sun set over our beloved Wasatch mountains in the summer and relaxing in front of our roaring fire in the winter.

In 2004, I met a teenage world-class ski jumper, Lindsey Van, who told me that women were not allowed to jump in the Olympic Games. First I was in disbelief, and then I was furious. Soon after that pivotal meeting, I became the President of Women's Ski Jumping USA. With an army of athletes, volunteers and the court of public opinion, we would go on to wage a 10-year, global battle for justice to one day see women ski jumping on the world's biggest sports stage. We ultimately won and women's ski jumping made its debut - and made history - in Sochi, Russia in 2014.

Since 2004 I have enjoyed my time as a Senior Vice President with Berkshire Hathaway (formerly Prudential) Real Estate. They have been wonderful to me.

I was honored to serve as President of the International Women's Forum (IWF) from 2011 to 2013, where I was surrounded by many bright and visionary global women leaders who continue to lead our world on a brighter path forward. Most recently, I served as IWF's Global Ambassador. My time spent at IWF greatly increased my understanding of and perspective into the incredible talent and leadership potential that women have in this world. It inspired me to champion, promote, and enable women to create their own extraordinary legacies.

I am survived by my wonderful husband John Huebner, my two incredible children and their spouses whom I have loved as though they were my own; my son, Andrew Stafford Corradini and his wife Valerie Petrone Corradini of Hillsborough, CA, and my daughter, Andrea Marie Corradini, and her husband, David Brown of Portland, OR; my three wild and wonderful grandchildren, Savannah, Stafford, and Sebastian; my sister Laura McMullen, my brother Daniel McMullen and his wife Marina; my niece, Katya, my nephew Matthew McMullen (Ashley) and their girls Ella and Ava, and my nephew David McMullen (Ayumi), and their son Akira. I am preceded in death by my parents Horace Martin McMullen and Marie-Louise McMullen, and my brother, Garrett McMullen. My family has brought me immeasurable love, support, strength, and joy and I know they will continue to live with sheer grace and joyful hearts.

I am profoundly grateful to the amazing medical team at the Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) for their care since my diagnosis of Stage IV Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (the non-smoking type) on July 23rd; Dr. Wallace Akerley, Julie Luckart, APRN, Terry Van Duren, RN, Dr. Anna Beck, Dr. Jonathan Boltax, Audra Zdunich, RN, and Brigitte Christianson, who administered my IVs gently and painlessly, and always left me with a hug.

To all the incredible nurses and aides who were so kind during all my days and nights at HCI, you were a blessing. I would also like to thank Sue and Liza, the nurses with Community Nursing Services who took care of my comfort and allowed me to be at home with my family during my hardest and final days."

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Deedee Corradini will be held at 12pm, Monday, March 9th, at Wasatch Presbyterian Church, 1626 South, 1700 East. A reception will follow from 2pm to 4:30 pm at Log Haven, 6451 E. Mill Creek Canyon Rd.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to one of the following organizations in honor of her memory: American Community School in Beirut, Lebanon (http://www.acs.edu.lb/page.cfm?p=721), Women's Ski Jumping USA (www.wsjusa.com), or the Huntsman Cancer Foundation (http://healthcare.utah.edu/huntsmancancerinstitute/giving/huntsman-cancer-foundation/)

I am so saddened to hear of Deedee's passing. What an incredible woman she was. I met Deedee in the mid to late 1990's when she was Mayor of Salt Lake City and dating my good friend, John Huebner. In fact, we attended their beautiful wedding about 16 years ago?? I considered it a true privelege to have her as a friend and was thrilled to know John had met the perfect soul mate to share his life. I know no other woman with such an incredible list of accomplishments. I'm pretty sure no one can fill her shoes or follow in her footsteps. Deedee, thank you for all of your exhausting efforts to make this world a better place for all of us. I'm sure there are holes in the hearts of many, especially your children and grandchildren ... And of course, John. Your friend, Eugenia

I'm pretty sure I met DeeDee in the summer of 1951 in Shimlan, where my Dad had rented a summer house(see photo). I was 6. I think she taught me how to swing a softball bat. It was kind of her to play with a younger boy. Although I continued at ACS until 1955, I don't remember her in the school setting (grade school kids can be quite rigid about inter-class socializing). I re-established contact with ACS alumni about 3 years ago, and having seen her name at various times, I thought about reaching out to her, but kept putting it off, which I now regret. Even if I am mistaken about having met her in 1951, after reading about her, I wish I had been able to make her acquaintance as a fellow ACS alumnus. I celebrate her achievements and mourn her loss, while extending my deepest condolences to her family.

I am sorry to see that DeeDee died. She was a great person. I saw her at the Salt Lake City & County Building celebration and at the Arts Festival in Park City. She was always friendly. I know she helped women ski jumpers get into the Olympics. Love, Cindy Gottschall

We at the EY Women Athletes Business Network are deeply saddened by the death of Deedee Corradini, a powerful advocate for women in sport and leadership. A former president and global ambassador for the International Women's Forum (IWF), she helped bring to life the mentoring program for the EY Women Athletes Business Network.

Throughout her career, Deedee pushed for progress on women's leadership issues. She was a no-nonsense individual who knew how to get things done. An astute politician as mayor of Salt Lake City, she lead the winning campaign to host the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. Subsequently she led the charge to bring women's ski jumping to the Winter Games, and was in Sochi Russia to witness the inaugural event. We are honored to have a role to play now in her legacy with our mentoring program. Over the coming years, we will work even harder, in partnership with IWF, to pay tribute to her by building out this program and making it a successful bridge between female athletes and top female leaders.

Deedee became a good friend during the ten years I served as Headmaster of ACS at Beirut. She and John would come, visit the students' community service projects sometimes with her children always engaged in the extended school on a human level. Deedee modeled for all of us what it meant to care about someone or something by her determination to create positive inclusive change. We will miss this wonderful woman who was a leader in all she did. George H. Damon, Jr. and Joumana Barazi-Damon, Izmir, Turkey

Mayor corradini was elected when's was a slcpd officer. She provided the city with great new programs and was very progressive In helping the communities of slc.,utah.
In doing that she gave me a platform and a position to reach across all the diverse communities , to promote and provide programs that brought the community and police dept closer together.
It is really sad to see such a person go so early. Her ideas and thoughts of helping others is needed more than ever..
I hope for the best to her family in their time of loss..

The McMullen's were friends of our family for as long as I can remember. Deedee was a friend of my Mom's and inspired her to get involved as a volunteer at the SLC Olympics and as a representative of the women's legislative council. But most of all I remember her hugs and her smile. Her joy was contagious. Margaret Lacy (Salt Lake City, UT)

If you lived in Utah in the 1990's, it was pretty obvious that Salt Lake City had a dynamic mayor, Mayor Deedee Corradini.
If you live in Utah in 2015, it's pretty obvious that Deedee Corradini was a gifted visionary. She left a legacy on Salt Lake City and Utah that is monumental. They include light rail, the Gateway Mall and a beautiful west side gateway, a baseball park, the LDS Plaza that is considered as a tranquil, beautiful park but not a place for demonstrations.
Of course, there was the 2002 Winter Olympics one of the magical, unforgettable memories in Utah history.
That is the Deedee I admired until I had a chance to work with her in Real Women Run, a statewide, nonpartisan group that is encouraging, recruiting, and training more women to run for office. It was then that I met and worked with a gifted visionary who was a warm, enthusiastic, committed individual who still wanted to make a significant difference and improve policy-making by bringing more gender diversity to public office holders.
Deedee Corradini was a founding member of Real Women Run. She helped procure funding to conduct training, She recruited not only candidates but skilled trainers to assist those candidates. She recruited talented women to serve on the Real Women Run board.
When I received her phone invitation, I was thrilled to be invited to participate in a cause to which I was already committed. I was also pleased to talk at some length with Deedee Corradini. I had admired her for decades.
My expectations of working with Deedee were high, and those expectations were met. She was decisive, determined, assured, and, yes, visionary.
Real Women Run was initiated in 2011. I hope that in 20 years when we look back on the work of Real Women Run we see the same progress in women holding political office and serving on boards in Utah as we have seen in downtown Salt Lake City in the last twenty years.
Thanks, Deedee. You've set a high mark, but we can do it just like you did it.

I first met Deedee when I was a student at the University of Utah. I've always admired her dedication to what she believed in and no matter whatever opposition there was, she never let anything deter her or stand in the way of her vision. I envied her energy and focus. She was ALWAYS on the ball and ALWAYS arrived so well prepared and professional as well as graceful in everything she did. Knowing Deedee the past 25 years has been a priviledge and applying the lessons she has taught me and the examples that she has set for me has helped me immensly in being successful my own business and many other aspects of my life. Thank you Deedee for all that you are. I have no doubt that heaven is a much funner place with you there.

I met Deedee when she was doing PR for Snowbird and I was a young congressman (MI) visiting with a delegation. On one occasion she lent me her VW Beatle to go into Salt Lake City. On the way back a snow storm hit. A truck coming down the mountain smashed into her car, nearly pushing me to an uncertain fate over the edge. I felt so bad about her car. If she felt bad about it, she never let on. From then on we became good, if occasional, friends all these years. The last time I talked to her was two years ago. I am shocked and saddened at her final departure. Deedee you were one great lady! To John, Andrea and Andy (who I met as little kids), my condolences.

I've been incredibly fortunate to have known and worked for Deedee Corradini for many glorious years. As the mayor of SLC, she was an inspiration to me while I was working at the police department. During that time, I had the opportunity to coach a team of young men for her Mayor's Late Night Basketball program which she developed to serve as an alternative to gang involvement for troubled youth. During her tenure I saw Mayor Corradini and her passionate community outreach coordinator, Pauline Valdez, do so much for so many so often. Later on by coincidence we became neighbors in Park City. True to her character she would periodically ask me for advice and assistance on how to help someone in need in the community. I fondly cherish those times on my runs with my boys, I would pass her and her beloved husband John as they took their daily exercise speed walk together through the neighborhood. Even if they were engaged in a serious discussion, they would always take the time to let me know how much they loved seeing my boys and to teasingly chide me for not keeping up with them. On my run today my thoughts were full of the memories of Deedee's kindness and lifetime dedicated service to her community. I will miss my beloved leader, neighbor and friend but my heart is comforted knowing she is continuing her work with other angels now.

I have watched Deedee from a distance for many years. My impression of her was of a strong, intelligent, loving, kind, powerful and pioneering woman. Her legacy will be felt in Utah for many years to come. Not only the impact she had on our beautiful city when she was our Mayor but her influence in the lives of countless people with whom she associated on a daily basis. Deedee was a powerful force to be reckoned with. Thanks for all that you did for women and the world. Her father's church guided my family through the Viet Nam War protests and led us to a deeper spiritual sense in a state devoid of free-thinking clarity. My warmest wishes to Deedee's family for healing and peace. We are all better for having enjoyed her service and commitment to SLC and the world with creativity, vision and heart.

On behalf of NeighborWorks Salt Lake staff and board, we wish to express our condolences to the family for their loss. Mayor Corradini was instrumental in driving important development in Salt Lake City's west side neighborhoods. Her leadership as a Mayor empowered her division directors to work with communities to make things happen from midnight basketball to trax line. I remember when she negotiated hard with the Governor to have a community member represented on the Salt Lake Winter Olympic committee. I was the fortunate individual who benefited from her appointment and it was an opportunity for us to work together to make sure Salt Lake City schools and non profits were involved in the winter games. I truly appreciated her commitment to community, young people and all that she did to invest in neighborhoods. She was truly a guiding light and will be missed. Salt Lake City was fortunate to experience her leadership as Mayor.

Deedee's terms as Mayor of Salt Lake City coincided almost exactly with my tenure as Executive Director of the agency that operates the Salt Lake Community Shelter and the various shelters used in the winter time. There were difficult and challenging issues and Deedee took them and helped find solutions. She was active, an advocate, a negotiator and a kind and interested leader. I feel privileged to have known her and to have been able to work with her on some very challenging issues. Maun Alston

It seems a bit surreal to hear that Deedee has left us since I've always thought of her as invincible. She left an incredible legacy that, in my mind, will continue her invincibility for decades to come and she will live on in the memories of innumerable people throughout the world.
