Mrs. Annie Leola Rakestraw Avery, age 75, of Morganton, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at her residence. Leola was born the daughter of the late Joe Rakestraw and Ethel Foster Rakestraw on September 5, 1939 in Union County, NC.
Leola was a lifelong member of Willow Tree AME Church where she served on the Stewardess Board #2. She was a member of the Blue Ridge Elks Lodge Temple # 1227 and served as Daughter Ruler for a few years, she was also a member of the Eastern Star Radiance Chapter # 11 in Charlotte. Leola was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She will be greatly missed.
Along with her parents, Leola is preceded in death by four sisters, Willie Mae Norwood, Grace Winchester, Sarah Sowell and Louise Walker; and two brothers, Joe Rakestraw, Jr. and Eugene Rakestraw.
Those left behind to cherish Leola's memory include her husband of over 50 years, James Louis Avery of the home; a daughter, Cynthia D. Moore and her husband, Nathan of Morganton; three grandchildren, Nathan Moore, Jr., Niguel Moore and Niaya Moore all of Morganton; a sister, Carrie Mae Winchester of Monroe; and two brothers, Isaiah Rakestraw of Darlington, SC and George Rakestraw and his wife, Kaye of Morganton. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, April 6, 2015 at Willow Tree AME Church with the Rev. Karry Rigsbee serving as presiding minister. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
The family requests memorials be made to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, 1715 Enon Road Valdese, NC 28690.
