William "Bill" Jay Bentley, 83, of Morganton, died Tuesday, May 19, 2015 at Burke Hospice and Palliative Care in Valdese.
Bill was born in Alexander County, NC on January 21, 1932 to the late Jay and Lois Stine Bentley. He was married to the late Ruth Clark Bentley, who preceded him in death in 2002. Bill was a furniture maker at Drexel Heritage Furniture, with whom he retired after many years of service. Bill was a faithful member of Brown Mountain Baptist Church in Morganton. He could best be described as a mighty man of God who loved the Lord and his family. Bill enjoyed working in his garden, chopping wood, and woodworking. He was a kind and gentle man who was a friend to all, as he never knew a stranger. He will be greatly missed.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Lou Bentley; and three brothers, Gene, Carol, and Roy Bentley.
Survivors include his children, Danny Bentley (Renee), Martha McAlpin (James), Clinton Bentley, Jerry Bentley, Judy Whitson, PeeWee Clark (Bertha), Wanda Chester (Steve), Sharon Fleming, Doc Clark (Shannon), Marsha Gragg (Jeff), and John Pritchard (Jennifer); twenty two grandchildren; thirty three great grandchildren; a brother, Larry Bentley; and two sisters, Shirley and Brenda.
A funeral will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Friday, May 22, 2015 at Brown Mountain Baptist Church in Morganton with Pastor Johnny Shelton officiating. Interment will follow at the Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., prior to the service at the Church.
