Charla Jean Berry Johnson was born September 10, 1940 in Lubbock, Texas to the late Samuel Bert Berry Sr. and Ruth Mildred McKee-Berry, her passing follows that of her father in 2008, her mother in 2009 and her loving husband of 50 plus years, James R. "Jim" Johnson in 2010. Charla went to be with the Lord on Monday October 12, 2015.
She is survived by her children Cindi Walden of Hobbs, New Mexico and Christopher Johnson of Lubbock, Texas, granddaughters, Miranda Dee Cummings and Jessica Jean Todd; and great grandchildren, Dylinn, Willow, Hudson and Olivia. Her brother Sammy, his wife Patricia, their two children, Shawn, Lacy and grandchildren. Her sister Susan, husband Donnie, their children Samantha her husband Jerry and Blake his wife Kim and grandchildren.
Charla was in the Lioness Club for many years and served as its charter President. She also received the Melvin Jones Fellowship award in 2004. Charla was a very talented artist and taught several classes on various arts. Her painting medium were oil, pastels and water color. She was also involved with ceramics and gourds. However, Charla's passion was sculpting Santas, of which she would sculpt from small to life-size figures. Her Santas were sought after by family, friends, artists and anyone who came in contact with them. Her Santas were unique and one of a kind and had a gift of making them seem to come to life with a twinkle in their eyes.
She stayed involved with various activities, such as participating in a monthly Bunco night as well as hosting the West Texas Gourd club meetings. Charla was a very thoughtful and generous person who would help everyone she could. She was a loving and caring wife, mother, sister and friend. She loved being a grandmother and aunt and was lovingly referred to as Granny and Auntie.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Charla's name to Joe Arrington Cancer Center, Lubbock, Texas; or to a charity of your choice.
