It was with a sense of shock and profound sadness that I learned of the recent passing of Lionel Ruhman. Lionel was a gentleman of the old-school, a truly lovely family man who set a great example for all of us whose lives he touched.
My sincere condolences to Elza, Eric, and all of his family.

It is with sadness that I learn that my lodge brother Lionel has passed away.
He opened his house annually to all his brothers at the lodge. We enjoyed the fraternity. My deepest sympathy to Elza, Eric and Martha.

Lionel Ruhman was a true gentleman. He took a tremendous interest in people. He touched many lives.....including mine. His parents raised an outstanding son. It's sad for all of us that we now have a world without Lionel Ruhman in it. Arnie Wishnick

I recently found out your sad news and have been devastated since. Growing up in the Flood family of Santa Monica, I got to be with my sister's best friends at Santa Monica Christian Church and mostly at our house. Being with Elza and Donna as they met & fell in love with these handsome men in their uniforms, then marrying & each having two children who I got to babysit on a few New Year's Eve's when the 4 adults would go out on the town.....all in all, such memories of being a part of your family's life gave me the wisdom of what to do for my own family. Martha, do you remember when you checked me into St. John's Hospital the night that I was about to give birth to our daughter, Sarah? I do, it was such a delight having the young lady who I had babysat turning around and helping me into a wheel chair on April 28, 1980. Elza, I cannot extend my sympathy enough for you and the rest of your family at this time. Blessings on all of you. And (as Bob Hope use to sing and say), "Thanks for the Memories!"

Dear Elza, Eric and Martha,
I was very sad to learn about Lionel's passing. When I was 17 and came over from Belgium, Lionel and you made me feel very welcome and offered me a warm home away from home. I have very fond memories of the long talks Lionel and I had then, where he showed a true interest in getting to know me, challenged me to think beyond the obvious and shared his thoughts, and all of this mixed with a lot of humor and fun. I will never forget these moments and I feel that they have had lasting impact.
I will remember Lionel as a kind, caring and very intelligent person. His kindness, love for his family and friends and his lust for life also speak from the pictures you have shared. He will be missed dearly.
Please know that you are in our hearts and in our thoughts.
Those we love can never be more than a thought away...
For as long there is a memory, they live in our hearts to stay.

Wow - what can I say that isn't already being said a thousand times. What a thoroughly fine man, full of love and loved by all. His goodness was echoed in his entire wonderful family and his prosperity, spiritual and otherwise. Thinking of him has always made my eyes light up, and my heart goes out to Elza, Martha and Eric.

Lionel and I were classmates at Dupo High School. He was president of our Senior Class. Over the years we have had 12 Reunions. Lionel participated in the majority. Lionel was an amazing person. He had a kind and generous heart. Throughout the years I felt like I had a brother, even though he was miles away. He and Elza have a special place in my heart. I lost more than a good friend.

Our heartfelt sympathy to Elza and family. No one is ever truly prepared for a loss such as this...but in the time that your loved one was here, lives were touched, memories were made and bonds were formed that will last forever.

Lionel and I were classmates from the first grade, through High School. We shared many experiences over the years. The world has lost a great person and I have lost a good friend. I haven't cried since I was a kid but shed a few tears with his passing. He will be sadly missed at any future reunions that we might have. Marge and I express our greatest sympathy to all of the family.

Lionel and I first met when we both attended Dupo High School in Illinois during the time period from 1946 until 1950. It was during that time that we became very close friends and remained so. Over the many years ,our friendship grew stronger developing into one of sincere mutual respect. In addition to being a very successful businessman Lionel was a wonderful human being. He had a very positive attitude that resulted in a supportive influence on others. My wife Michelle and I always enjoyed the many times we spent with him and his wife Elza including our recent evening we spent with them at their lovely home last December. Our hearts go out to Elza and her family during this difficult time.

It was an honor to know Lionel as one of my husband's fondest classmates from the Dupo High School Class of 1950. What a sweetheart he was and he and Elza always made our many trips to Illinois so much fun. Lionel was a kindhearted gentleman, generous, friendly and kind. We are so thankful that we had the opportunity to stop in for a visit at your home last December. We will miss you so much and send our prayers to the family for their loss.

I dedicated my rosary prayer to you Lionel. Hear my prayers as you heard me and gave me counsel during my dark times. May the light in me shine with the light that is you now. I will continue my path in masonry in your honor. You were there for me when I needed someone, so I will be there for someone who is in need like I was, following your example. Your friendship was the light in my darkness. Without it, I surely would have fallen. Instead, you were there, and I changed as a person. I wish I could speak with you right now. Till we meet again.
Love,
Christian
