Marjorie (Marge) Burggraf, 93, a longtime Idaho Falls resident, passed away peacefully on March 30, 2016 surrounded by family, in San Diego, CA, where she had resided since 1999.
Marge was born on January 3, 1923, in Salt Lake City, UT to Alonzo Melvin and Melba (Homer) Smith. She and her family, including her sisters, Tressa, Lois, and Joann, moved to Idaho Falls, ID in 1935. There her father opened A.M. Smith Furniture Co. on Shoup and "A" Street, later moving to "C" Street.
Marge attended O.E. Bell Junior High School, Central High School, and the University of Idaho. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority and lived in the sorority house until the beginning of the Second World War. Marge and her close friend Molly (Bradbury) Gagon then moved to San Francisco and later to Salt Lake City working for the Quartermaster Corps.
Marge met and later married Robert (Bob) V. Burggraf in June of 1946. They had three sons, Robb, Steve, and Greg. Steve was killed in 1987 in a plane crash in Cody, WY. Robert Sr. passed away in 1994. Robert, Jr. passed away from a heart attack in 1995.
Bob and Marge started Robert V. Burggraf Construction Co. with one truck in 1953. It became one of the largest privately held construction companies in the Mountain West, operating until the auction of the company in 1998. The two were also involved in the startup of Western Construction and Allied Paving.
Marge is survived by her son Greg, her sister Joann (George) Lefferts, seven grandchildren: Stephenie, James, Benjamin, Jennifer, Brett, Rob, and Jeffery; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
