Geaneen Stewart Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 19, 2016.

Geaneen "Gigi" Stewart
After a courageous battle with cancer, our warrior gained her angel wings on Monday April 18, 2016 surrounded by her family. Geaneen was born in Flint, Michigan on February 7, 1958 to Gayle and June (Colbert) Stewart. Geaneen moved to Traverse City in 1965 with her parents and three brothers. She attended Sabin Elementary and created everlasting memories with her childhood friends and brothers Scott, Mark, and Kevin. After graduating from Traverse City Senior High School in 1976 she worked various jobs before finally settling into the one that would forever hold her heart-working for Traverse City Area Public Schools. She worked 20+ years in food service for the school district, first at Norris Elementary before moving to Silver Lake Elementary. In her years in food service, Geaneen touched countless lives. She connected with thousands of children with her kind heart and infectious laughter and formed life-long friendships with coworkers.
On February 9, 1982 Geaneen welcomed a son, David Ross Shutler into the world. Her only child, Dave quickly became the light of her life and their relationship and bond grew exponentially as the years passed. On July 26, 2008, Geaneen was overjoyed when her son married Sarah (Maurer) Shutler.
January 2, 2012 became an incredibly joyous day when Geaneen gained the title she so longed for, Gigi, as she welcomed the arrival of her beloved grandson Kellen Ross Shutler. That little blonde haired, blue eyed boy became the most important thing in her life. The bond between Gigi and Kellen was strong. From the moment she laid eyes on him, she loved him fiercely and completely. She did anything for her "bugsy" and cherished time together.
Geaneen is survived by her son David (Sarah) Shutler and grandson Kellen; mother June Stewart; brothers Scott (Karen) Stewart, Mark (Pinky) Stewart, and Kevin Stewart; stepsisters Susan (Barry) Shiflett and Julie (Denny) Dudzik; several aunts, uncles and cousins; many loved nieces and nephews; best friend Nancy Burns, and a multitude of extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her father Gayle Stewart, step-father Keith Stewart, both maternal and paternal grandparents and multiple aunts and uncles.
A celebration of life will take place on Saturday, April 23rd at Silver Lake Elementary. The family will receive guests at 2:00 with a service following at 3:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made either to Hospice of Michigan or to Silver Lake Elementary to establish a scholarship in her honor.

My first memory of Geaneen is of a seven-year-old being chastised by her mother for beating up a neighbor boy. She took the scolding with her head slightly bowed and a small, close-lipped smile that said, "Ha! I did it and I could do it again...and I just might."

The sight gave me a quiet laugh of surprise and admiration for a tough little girl and her fierce confidence.

Mrs. Stewart may have been doubly concerned about Geaneen's behavior since she was trying to raise a daughter in a tribe of boys. My recall of the following 11 years is that those concerns were unfounded. At least I didn't hear of any further pugilistic conquests (brothers not included).

I hope, though, that some of that seven-year-old's spunk stayed with Geaneen always.
