Dorothy Gifford Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 27, 2016.

Dorothy Duncan Gifford, 89, a lifelong resident of Old Saybrook, passed away peacefully at home on June 22, 2016.
She was the daughter of the late Frank and Dorothy (Young) Duncan. She was predeceased by her brother Robert W. Duncan Sr., her sister, Jeanne (Duncan) McMillan and her great-grandson, Tyler Christian Boles.
She attended UConn, worked for many years for SNET and was a member of Grace Episcopal church. She was interested in genealogy and was proud that she was a descendant of Governors John Winthrop Sr. and Jr. Dorothy was a fearless traveler, the neighborhood and family photographer, a town historian, a student of Shakespeare, feeder of every stray cat that came her way, the hostess of many memorable picnics and happy hours and a tireless shopper!
She is survived by her children: Candace L. McConochie and her husband, John; William H. Gifford IV, Grant D. Gifford and his wife, Carin; Jennifer W. Gifford and her fiance, Jeff Hinxman.
Her grandchildren: Holly McConochie Boles and her husband, Chris. William H. Gifford V and his wife, Erica; John P. McConochie and his wife, India; Jessica L. Calle and her husband, Johny and Benjamin W. Little and his fiance, Emily. Her great-grandchildren: Catherine, Willow, Annabelle, Liam and Dylan. She also leaves cousins, nieces/nephews, great nieces/nephews friends and her brother-in-law, Bruce T. McMillan. It would be remiss not to mention her beloved cat, Earl Grey, who was unwilling to leave her side even at the end.

Special thanks to her nephew, Robert W. Duncan, who not only took over the care of her lawn, but enabled her to go for the rides she so enjoyed these past few years. Many thanks to her faithful caregivers, Pat Manning of the earlier years, and Adiza Ali of the last. Without all your help we could not have kept her at home. Services will be at a later date.
