Rex Mauldin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 2, 2016.

Rex Mauldin was born on the Mauldin Dairy east of Amarillo on May 3, 1928 in the home place. He was baptized on May 5th at the 10th Ave United Methodist Church in Amarillo, Texas. He would spend most of his life at a church on Sundays and Wednesdays and live in a Methodist Parsonage for 55 years of his life. His Father Henry Lee was a circuit riding Methodist preacher in the Oklahoma Territory from 1900 to 1913 and his Mother, Mary Francis Burnett, was a native of Yell County Arkansas. So it was natural he was a United Methodist Pastor for his entire adult life starting with his licensing to preach in 1946.
Rex graduated from Amarillo High School in 1946, McMurry College in 1950 and graduated with M. Th. from Perkins at S.M.U. in 1954. As a Superintendent of the United Methodist Church he was awarded the Doctor of Divinity Degree by McMurry College under the administration of Dr. Thomas Kim. He was invited to join Alpha Chi Honor Society while a student at McMurry and was a member of Ko Sari Social Club. He served on the Board of McMurry for several years. Other boards included Methodist Hospital, Sears, Butman Methodist Camp, Ceta Canyon Methodist Camp, Methodist Home at Waco Bishop's appointee to Texas Conference of Churches, the Ed Robb Evangelistic Board, and Dean of the Northwest Texas Conference Cabinet.
He spent 41 years serving as a pastor of various churches in the Northwest Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church. His pastoral ministry revealed a strong interest and activity in Evangelism, Prayer, Witnessing and Recruitment for the Methodist Ministry and Mission Field. He was elected Citizen of the year in 1963 at Munday, Texas because of his wife and his work with the High School in Munday. He served 15 years in Administrative work for that conference including District Superintendent of Lubbock and Big Spring District of the United Methodist Church and Conference Director.
Two sons preceded him in death, Mark Lynn Mauldin, Band Director in 1998, and John Paul Mauldin, New York Dancer who died in 2002. Survivors include his wife of 66 years Letha Mauldin, Dr. Allen and wife Betsy Mauldin of Cedar Park Texas and their four children and four grandchildren. Dr. Gary and wife Cynthia Mauldin of Chattanooga, Tennessee and their four sons. Mrs. Joy and Scotty Henderson of Abilene, Texas and their three children and three grandchildren. Four grandchildren of Mark and Cheryl Mauldin. A close niece Thelma Lemons, like a sister to him, and her husband Jim. Dr. and Mrs. David Murrah very close friends of Rockport, Texas.
A Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 5, 2016 at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory, from 9:00a.m. to 1:00p.m. Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, July 5, 2016 at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 525 Beech St., at 2:00p.m. with a committal service to follow at Elliott-Hamil Garden of Memories Cemetery. A great man of God is now home with Christ! The angels are rejoicing with him in Heaven today. Growing up with Rex as my pastor, my employer, my friend, and my mentor has had profound impact on my life. I frequently reflect and rely on the loving wisdom he and Letha have so graciously shared with me (and everyone they encounter). True love of God flowed from this man. He will be missed, but his godly impact on this world will continue. My condolences and prayers of comfort to the family.
