William Edward Dessert, age 70, passed away Sunday July 3, 2016 at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness. He was the husband of Rebecca E. (Webster) Dessert with whom he shared 26 years of marriage.

Born in Macon, Missouri, he was the son of Wilfred and Grace (Aiello) Dessert. He graduated in 1963 from Fairhaven High School and worked as a plant manager at the New Bedford Waterfront for 30 years. William served in the Unites States Air Force for nine years, including two year tour in Vietnam as a Morse code interceptor. He was recognized for flying more than 100 missions behind enemy lines. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to New Bedford and was a member of the American Legion.

He will be remembered as a kind, loving husband, father, grandfather and friend.

Survivors include four children, Robert Dessert and his wife Kristin of New Bedford, Grace Marie Dessert of Westport, Amy Janes and her husband Jim Walsh of Wakefield, RI, Mark Janes and his wife Amy of Middletown, RI, three grandchildren, Robert Dessert Jr. of New Bedford, Anna and Madelyn Janes of Middletown, RI, two sisters Joyce Sturgeon and her husband Glenn of Acushnet, Susan Nelson of Raynham and several nieces and nephews. Bill was also the grandson of the late Grace and Thomas Aiello and Melina and Wilfred Dessert.

His visitation will be held Saturday, July 9, 2016 from 4-8pm at the Waring Sullivan Home of Memorial Tribute at Fairlawn Mortuary, 180 Washington Street, Fairhaven. Funeral and burial will be private.
