Jose A. Vargas, age 67, of New Bedford, passed away Friday, August 19, 2016 at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He was the husband of Luica (Felicione) Vargas whom he shared 45 years of marriage.
Born in Pedro Miguel, Faial, Azores, a son of the late Manuel da Terra and Senhorinha (Amaral) Vargas, he lived most of his life in Dartmouth before residing in New Bedford.
Joe worked at Chamberlain Manufacturing before establishing his own business, East Coast Forms Company, and was a former member of the Prince Henry Society.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters: Tina Vargas and her companion Ed Nickerson of Dartmouth and Karen Giorgianni and her husband Brian of New Bedford, four grandchildren: Sabrina and Kilian Vargas, Mia Giorgianni and Mackenzie Rappa, Brian, Hayden and Victoria Giorgianni and several adoring nieces and nephews. He was the cherished baby brother of Maria Vargas, Eduina Santos and her husband Manuel and Zulmira Antonio and her husband Joao, and predeceased by two sisters: Tina Jacinto and Maria Lemos.
His Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, August 25, 2016 at 10AM at St. Mary's Church, 783 Dartmouth St., Dartmouth. Visiting hours will be Wednesday from 5PM to 8PM at Waring-Sullivan Dartmouth Funeral Home, 230 Russells Mills Rd., Dartmouth. Burial private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his honor to The Greater Boston Food Bank, 70 S Bay Ave., Boston, MA 02118. Joe was a fantastic human being. We was a great business friend and always did a great job for us. Since his retirement I have made it a point to call and talk to him once or twice a year in order to pick his brain or to see how he was doing.
