Lillie B. Gheen Phillips of Henderson, Texas passed away Tuesday, September 6, 2016. Lillie was born November 9, 1923 in Kaufman, Texas and was the daughter of Charlie and Eunice Simmons. She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, J.W. (Jack) Gheen, her second husband, J.K. Phillips, and brothers, Herman Simmons and Temple Guy Simmons.

Lillie, who was a resident of Terrell until 2001, was married to Jack Gheen, June 25, 1938. They had three children: Jackie, Bobby, and Linda. Jack died of a heart attack November 22, 1966. She was married to J.K. Phillips in June of 1983.

Lillie was part of the “Greatest Generation” getting her sense of the world from the hard work, real love, and togetherness that came from living in a farming community. She learned from her mother the skills of cooking, sewing, embroidering and needlepoint, and family togetherness, which she passed on. She was a strong, self-motivated individual. While having only an 8th grade education she later in life pushed herself to get her GED and to learn business skills and became the administrator of Terrell Convalescent Center from 1974 to 1986.

Lillie had tireless energy and enjoyed camping, motorbike riding, and volunteering at many childcare centers.

She was proud to leave a legacy, which included three children and their spouses: Tommy and Jackie Waggoner of Henderson, Bobby and the late Carol Gheen of Carrollton, and Brad and Linda McGinnis of Henderson. Her legacy also includes nine grandchildren and their spouses: Chuck and Jodi Waggoner of Henderson, Jennifer and Dave Hunter of Wylie, Bobby and Kendall Gheen of Dallas, Jack Gheen of Carrollton, Katie and Terry Boyer of Carrollton, Patrick and Rachael McGinnis of Henderson, Preston and Rachel McGinnis of Henderson, Erin and Andy LaGrone of Henderson, and Caitlin and Chez Prior of Henderson. Lillie’s legacy continues with eight great grandchildren: Robin Driver, Alison Waggoner, Charlotte McGinnis, Lane Hunter, Max Boyer, Lillie Hunter, Reese Boyer, and Hank LaGrone and two more great grandchildren on the way, and one great great grandchild, Daniel Driver.

Lillie will be laid to rest during a private graveside service, which will be held, Saturday, September 10, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. in Oakland Cemetery in Terrell, but her spirit and love will live in our hearts forever.

My strongest memory of Aunt Lillie was being at her house in Terrell, sitting on the front porch and playing with the antique phone, which I wasn't supposed to do. She was a truly a gracious lady and a wonderful Aunt to my daddy. She will be missed. Tracey Gheen Moore daughter of Randolph Gheen.

My daddy loved Aunt Lillie, as did I. She was always happy, warm and welcoming. She will be missed.
