Zelda Kobre Bernard, 96, passed away on Thursday, September 8, 2016, surrounded by her family. The funeral was held at High Point Hebrew Cemetery on September 9. Zelda was born in Danville, Virginia, on October 26, 1919, to Ida and Samuel Kobre. She attended Averett College before leaving for Roanoke at the age of 19 to work for the U.S. Patent Office. Her work brought her to Richmond, where she reconnected with her childhood friend Herman W. Bernard, who was then stationed at Fort Lee. She became engaged to Herman in April of 1944 just before he was deployed to the European Theater. Upon his return, Zelda and Herman married on December 8, 1945, in High Point, North Carolina. Together, they raised two children, and they celebrated their 53rd anniversary before her beloved husband passed away in 1999. In 2004, Zelda moved to Abbotswood in Greensboro.
For over twenty years, she worked alongside Herman, first at Casard Furniture Company and later at Bernards Inc. She also volunteered for the American Red Cross and was an active member of B'nai Israel and Beth David Synagogues. After Herman's death, she volunteered at the High Point Police Department. Zelda enjoyed traveling the world with her husband, and she loved to dance, read, needlepoint and knit, and watch the Tar Heels win. She and her husband generously supported many worthwhile causes, including universities, hospitals, the Jewish community, and the community at large.
Above all, Zelda was devoted to her family, especially her husband Herman, her children, her four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. The family would like to extend sincere thanks to Rose Hill and her team, Bertha, Jackie, Jamie, and April, who cared for Zelda, especially in the last six months. Zelda was preceded in death by her older sister Rena Fleishman. She is survived by her younger brother Melvin Kobre, her son Dr. Stephen Bernard and wife Shulamit of Chapel Hill, daughter Rose Ackermann and husband Victor of Greensboro, grandchildren Seth Bernard and wife Alexa, Dina Ackermann Wiesen and husband Etan, Ariele Bernard, and Donna Ackermann Mizrahi and husband Ilan, along with three great-grandchildren, Livia Bernard and Lily and Henry Wiesen.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Zelda's honor to the Herman and Zelda Bernard Endowment at B'nai Shalom Day School, 804-A Winview Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27410, or to the charity of your choice.
