Groton- Shirley W. Smith, 88, of Groton, died Monday, November 7, 2016 at Groton Regency.
Mrs. Smith was born on May 10, 1928 in New London, daughter of James A. and Olive A. Wood. She was a 1947 graduate of W.M.I in New London. She worked in New London City Hall in the Registrar of Voters office for several years; she was then employed by Mary Kenny Nursing Home in Waterford as Program Director, and finally worked part-time in the Waterford School System. She was a long standing member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
She married her best friend, Allan H. Smith on May 13, 1950 in New London and remained happily married for 66 years. Together they had three children, Donna Fedors (husband Michael) of East Lyme, Karen Smith of Niantic, and Jeffrey Smith (wife Debbie) of Port St. Lucie, FL. She is also survived by grandchildren, Kirsten Fedors, Dylan and Brent Snide, and Jennifer, Zachary, and Phillip Smith. She was predeceased by her two sisters, June Rice of California, Norma Trakas of Norwich and her grandson Kyle Fedors of New London.
Shirley was a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend to so many. She treasured memories of her youthful summers spent at Camp View Farm helping her Uncle Norman, riding horses, joining her father on a fire call whenever possible, her countless summer days spent at McCook's beach with her children and friends, and swapping clothes and stories with her sisters, known throughout New London as 'the three splinters.' Kindness and caring for others was her credo for living and those who knew her were forever changed by just knowing her.
Her Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, November 10, 2016 at 12:00pm in Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, 13 Lake Ave., Niantic, CT. A Calling Hour will be held one hour prior to the service from 11:00 am until 12:00 pm in the funeral home. Burial will follow at West Neck Cemetary in Waterford, CT. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to honor her grandson through the Kyle M. Fedors Memorial Scholarship. Checks may be made out to: East Lyme Scholarship Assoc., Inc., PO Box 190, Niantic, CT 06357. The family would like to thank the staff of Groton Regency for their loving care.
