Frances Boone Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 13, 2016.

Frances Foster Boone passed away on Sunday, December 11, 2016. A funeral service will be held Thursday, December 15 at 2:00 pm at Hanes Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel, 6000 W. Gate City Blvd., with Rev. Kevin Kilbreth, Rev. J. S. "Bud" Parrish, and Rev. Wayne Poplin officiating. A private family burial will follow at a later time. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home from 1:00 until 2:00 pm.

Frances was born to C.D. and Emma Foster on January 16, 1920, in Danville, Virginia. The family moved to Greensboro's Glenwood neighborhood in the late 1920s. She attended Greensboro public schools, and King's Business College. She worked for Internal Revenue Service, retiring after 31 years of service. She was more widely known for her avocation, which was directing and decorating weddings. For more than 50 years, Frances and Pete worked as wedding consultants in and around Greensboro. She was affiliated with Gilliam's Florist and Central Floral Gardens for many years.

Frances enjoyed sports: as a young woman, Frances and her sisters played basketball, and she led the city Women's League as high scorer. She bowled, and once played for (and lost) the city's championship in tennis.

Frances' greatest joy was serving the Lord and being married to her beloved husband for 70 years. She was a devout Baptist who loved being in God's house and doing His work. As a dedicated, faithful member of Florida Street Baptist Church for 90 years, she served and headed numerous committees within the church: Church Hostess, preparing meals and social events, other activities; Property Committee, Finance Committee, and a member of the Church Council. She was chairman of the Sanctuary renovations committee. She sang in the choir, and was President of the Women's Missionary Union.
In 1991, Frances and Pete were selected "Seniors of the Month" by the Greensboro Parks & Recreation Department. As President of the Patient Planters Garden club, she led the effort to restore Glenwood Park, and the club was honored by Greensboro Beautiful for their work. Frances was a member of the Glenwood Lady Lions Club and was elected president on three occasions.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard A. "Pete" Boone, parents Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Foster, her sister and brother in law, Margaret and Gene Gottschalk, her sister in law Martha Short Foster, and her brother in law, Lane Smith.

Surviving are her sister, Clara F. Smith, of Greensboro; her brother Ed Foster of Chattanooga, TN; nieces Judith Smith Moore, Donna Gottschalk Ford and husband Dennis, all of Greensboro, and Sandra Foster Lee; and great nephews Michael Lee (wife Carey, their sons Caleb and Ethan), and Christopher Lee.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Hope Academy, located in the church facility that she loved so much. The address is1403 Florida Street, Greensboro, N. C., 27406.

Hanes-Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel has the honor of assisting the family.

Frances was a hugh part of my life for the last 40 years,we worked and met at Gilliams Florist in Greensboro, then I helped her and Pete with weddings on the weekend, I loved her just as I loved my own Mom,,,she was such a wonderful woman, friend and just the perfect example of a lady ,she was always generous and did so much for me and my family, I have sent her a card and talked to her often all these years and will miss her so very much, but comfort comes when knowing she is with Jesus and her beloved Pete, the only man with perfect teeth and the largest hands I have ever seen, ,I am so sorry I could not be there today for her service ,but my heart was there with you all, I will always love you Frances.

Frances was a part of my life for my entire life. She was a special lady and friend. If you were planning any event, she was the best. Frances and Pete loved their church, family, and friends. My son especially liked the spaghetti she made for Wednesday night supper. She touched a lot of lives. Always there with comfort food for grieving families.

Frances and Pete were two of the most wonderful people we have ever had the honor of knowing and serving at the Greenhouse restaurant. Our prayers are with the family and many many friends who, like Carolyn and I will miss Frances as we do Pete since his passing.

Frances and Pete were a couple which showed passion and compassion in their work for decades and were mentors who were held in high esteem for 2 generations. We should all pray that our lives could be full of such fun, and excitement as they have led. Frances was a true lady ahead of her time.
