Viola Mary "Ollie" Schmalstieg, 94, of Spokane, Washington, went home to be with the Lord on December 23, 2016 in Spokane, Washington. Visitation will be held on Friday, December 30, 2016, from 6-7 pm with a Rosary to follow at 7 pm at George Price Funeral Home. Funeral mass will be held Saturday, December 31, 2016, at 10 am at St. Michael's Catholic Church with Father Ernesto Lopez officiating. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park in Lubbock, Texas, under the direction of George Price Funeral Home. Viola was born September 7, 1922 in Seguin, Texas, to the late Joseph Syring and Aurelia Schneider. Viola graduated Salutatorian from Sinton high school. She later graduated from Corpus Christi Business School. She married Walter L. Schmalstieg in 1943. They moved to Levelland in 1947. She was a founding member of St. Michael's Catholic church, she served as organist and was a member of St. Mary's Altar Society. Viola farmed with her husband Walter until retirement in 1981. She also volunteered as a teacher's aide at St. Michael's Catholic elementary school and served in a life long ministry of visiting the elderly and infirmed. She left Levelland in 2012 to be close family. She was attended in death by grandchildren Joy and Peter Gilbert and Dr. Aurelia Schmalstieg. She is preceded in death by husband Walter L. Schmalstieg Sr.; brother R.C. Syring; sister Kay Gilbert; and grandson Terry Gilbert. Those left to cherish her memory are her son Dr. Walter L. Schmalstieg, Jr. and wife Lora of Fort Mill, SC; daughter Theresa Gilbert and husband Gary of Quinlan, TX; brother Joe Syring and wife Sunny of Dripping Springs, TX; brother Dennis Syring and wife Joann of Dennison, TX; brother-in-law Paul Gilbert and wife Carylon of Levelland, TX; five grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, Viola requested donations to Catholic Foundation Diocese of Lubbock – PO Box 98700; Lubbock, TX 99499
