Mark Charles Hyer, 55, of Gainesville, Va., died Thursday, December 29, 2016 at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
Born August 5, 1961 in Aurora, Ill., he was the son of Ralph Larry Hyer and the late Patricia R. Hyer. Mark, along with his sister Teryl Hyer Pomeroy and their parents, moved to Springfield, Va., in 1966 where he spent most of his elementary and middle school years. Mark spoke fondly of his time with family and friends in the neighborhood of Kings Park. Mark and his family moved to Fairfax Station, Va., in 1977 and Mark graduated from Lake Braddock High School in 1979.
Mark then attended the University of Virginia and graduated in 1983 with a degree in business. There he met many good friends and they continued their friendship through their annual beach trip and UVA football games. After graduation, he moved back to Northern Virginia where he started his career as an accountant at Cooper’s Accounting Firm.
He met his beloved wife, Laura McCormick Hyer, through a mutual friend and they were married in 1989. Together they had three children, Virginia, Lesley and C.J. Mark and his family moved from Annandale, Va., to Centreville, Va., in 1993 where Mark and his family met lifelong friends in the neighborhood of Confederate Ridge. In 2003, Mark and his family moved to Gainesville, Va., where their children grew up and where he met many good friends in Oak Valley.
In 2005, Mark’s work career took him to BearingPoint, which was bought out by Deloitte Consulting Group, where he was an accountant and a financial leader. Mark was an integral part in helping integrate BearingPoint into Deloitte operations and helping Deloitte convert accounting systems. During his career, he met many people who became more than just co-workers.
Mark spent his childhood summers at his grandparents in rural Illinois with his sister and cousins. He was an active member of St. Stephens United Methodist Church where he was a Youth Group counselor. In addition, he was a financial volunteer at Centreville United Methodist Church and was on the pastor-parish relations committee.
He loved to cheer on his Wahoos on Saturdays and the Redskins on Sundays; and as a lifelong Cubs fan, he was so excited when they won the World Series this past season. His interests included listening to the Mike & Mike show and the Tony Kornheiser show, reading Marvel comic books, listening to music (especially The Beatles), tinkering with electronics and spending time with his family and friends.
Mark battled a rare tumor (pheochromocytoma) and two rounds of Leukemia during his life, he was always positive and a fighter until the end.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 7, 2017 at St. Stephen’s United Methodist Church, 9203 Braddock Road, Burke, VA 22015. Mark’s family is asking that you show your Wahoo (UVA) pride by wearing Navy Blue and Orange.
In addition to his father, Larry Hyer, Mark is survived by his wife, Laura McCormick Hyer; two daughters, Virginia and Lesley Hyer; one son, Charles Joseph “C.J.” Hyer; one sister, Teryl Pomeroy; many nieces and nephews, Amanda Spellman, Chelsea Pomeroy, Lauren Messerschmidt, Matthew and Timothy McCormick, Thomas and Kelly McCormick; and in-laws Beverly McCormick, Ann McCormick Messerschmidt, and Steven and Victoria McCormick.

Mark, God Bless you, and thank you always. Thank you for the strong, wise, fun, kind, and loving example that you always were and always will be to the kids and families visiting your home, or when encountering you on the local ballfields. Whether on the athletic fields around Haymarket or in your kitchen at home, you were always witty, loving and gracious. A great example to me as a Dad. A great example to my own son and family. We are Blessed to know you.
God Bless you and your wonderful family. Love always from the Golders. Paul, Barbie, Matt, Michael and Christine.
