Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Bolander, 98, died peacefully January 11, 2017 at La Casa Assisted Living in Annapolis. Born in Grey, PA on August 23, 1918, Betty spent most of her childhood in Chambersburg, PA. She was the daughter of the late Dr. Benjamin Harrison Long and Rebecca Okeson Long, and sister to the late Francis Eileen Freet. Childhood memories included making house calls with her father using a horse drawn sleigh. She attended Catawba College in NC and graduated from Hood College in Frederick, MD with a degree in sociology. Betty had a career in social work in Baltimore before moving to Annapolis in 1952 to work in the business office of the Annapolis Yacht Club. Living on Thompson Street, she met and married neighbor Edwin “Ed” Bolander, and raised their family and lived on nearby Cheston Avenue for over 50 years.
Betty was an avid bridge player, antiques collector, sports enthusiast and follower of college basketball. During her lifetime, she participated in the Severn Town Club, the Jayshes and the Annapolis Antiques Club; and volunteered at the YWCA bookshop on State Circle and the Anne Arundel Medical Center on Franklin Street. Betty loved her family, neighbors, dogs and home and was known for her generosity and unconditional love.
Betty was predeceased by husband Ed in 2011, and is survived by her children Betsy Bolander Jenkins of Annapolis, Tom Bolander and his wife Susan Marsh Bolander of West River and; grandchildren Emily Jenkins Peake, Christine Bolander Rogers, Abigail Bolander, and Matthew Bolander; and great-grandchildren Henry Peake and Hudson Rogers.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 4 at the First Presbyterian Church located at 165 Duke of Gloucester, Annapolis, MD. 21401 followed immediately by a reception at the church.
