Larry Anthony Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 19, 2017.

Larry "Coach" Anthony, 76, of Levelland,Tx, has caught his last fish and played his last song on his beloved guitar on Wednesday, January 18, 2017, with his family by his side.

Larry was born May 11, 1940, to Jack and Lillian Anthony of Lamesa,Tx. Upon graduating from Lamesa High School, Larry was able to realize his dream when Rice University offered him a scholarship to play football. While a member of the Rice Owl football team, Larry played in the Sugar Bowl and the Bluebonnet Bowl. During his senior year, Larry was honored for his play by being invited to play in the Blue-Gray All Star game in Montgomery, Alabama. When Larry graduated from Rice, he was offered an opportunity to play for the Los Angeles Rams.

However, he chose to use his newly acquired B.S. in Biology and from that day on became known as "Coach" Anthony . For the 40 years Larry was a teacher/educator or a High School coach, he touched many lives of young students, yet, they all called him Coach Anthony, even after retiring in 2004.

Larry will be missed by his family though never forgotten. He is survived by his wife Katherine, his sister Virginia, daughter Stacia with Eric, sons: Tony with Lisa, and Lance with Suzanne. His grandchildren, Jennifer, Tiffany, Zach, Andrea, Miranda and Kaitlyn along with the great-grand children Addison, David III, and Landry were the stars in his eyes who he always had time to play a song on his guitar for them. At his request, the family will have a memorial service, at a later date, to celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, Coach Anthony asked that donations be made to South Plains College Foundation, memorial-Larry Anthony, 1401 S. College Ave, Levelland, Texas, 79336. Arrangements under the direction of George Price Funeral Home, Levelland, TX.

Bill McCulloch

I was sorry to read in the Lamesa Press-Reporter of the passing of Larry Antony. I was privileged to play alongside Red on both offense and defense for the Golden Tornados football team, and we knocked heads a lot on the practice field. He earned my respect as a footballer, a friend, and an all-round good guy. I'm glad to see that he was able to pass that along to others as a coach. I pray that you are blessed with comfort from God and by knowing that there are many who sympathize with you in your loss. Bill McCulloch, LHS Class of '59.

From the time I first met Larry in the second grade at Woody school, he was my best friend for many years, though our paths diverged after high school graduation. Larry was a rock, so I was stunned to hear of his passing. His offspring are truly blessed to have had such a forebear.

Coach Anthony was my football and basketball coach at Lamesa Junior High in 1964-65. I think it was his first teaching and coaching job after graduating from Rice. Being from Lamesa, we all knew what a great football player he was. But we soon learned what a great coach and a great man he was as well. I have a couple of very specific memories of him that always make me smile. My deepest condolences to the family. I know Coach will be missed.
