On January 26, 2017, Heaven gained another angel, Doris Ruth Hood. Doris was born to Ewell McCloud Smith and Little Nan McKellar Smith on June 22, 1933, in Forney, Texas. She graduated from Forney High School in 1950 and married James Frank Hood in 1954. They were blessed with 2 daughters, Donna and Vivian.
The wife of a career Air Force Master Sergeant, Doris devoted her life to him and her daughters. As they moved from state to state, she worked as a secretary to the Captain of Base Supply, Corps of Engineer, IRS, and VA Hospital.
Doris loved life—enjoying traveling, working crossword puzzles, going to the beach, playing games, and being with family. But most importantly, she loved being “Granny” to her grandchildren and great grandchildren! Doris showed love and compassion to so many people with her big heart and desire to help those in need. As a life-long Christian and member of Forney’s First Baptist Church and the Eastern Star for most of her life, “Granny” gave so much to others and loved unconditionally.
Doris was predeceased by her parents, siblings—Mavis Foster, Mary Evelyn Adams, Nanette Crow, Ewell (Bud) Smith, Johnny Smith—and her loving husband of almost sixty years. Those who are left to celebrate her life and her going to our Heavenly Home are daughters, Donna Carrol Lawler and husband, Jimmy Lawler; Vivian Nan Themer and husband, Donald Themer—Grandchildren, William Themer and wife, Holley; Matthew Lawler and wife, LaDonna; Waylon Themer and wife, Mary Anne; Rachel Calvery and husband, Scott; Weston Themer—Great-Grandchildren, Rylie Lawler, Kherington Themer, Guyton Calvery, Kambrie Lawler, Ella Themer, Bellami Calvery, and Luke Themer. She also leaves many nieces, nephews, and friends who love her dearly.
Celebration of life will be held January 28, 2017, at 10:00 a. m. at First Baptist Church in Forney. Visitation will be at 9:00 a. m. January 28, 2017, prior to the celebration.
Memorials may be made to Forney Historical Preservation League or Forney Hillcrest Cemetery.
