In lieu of flowers, I think Betty would have much preferred a donation to a no-kill animal shelter. She was a big animal lover. http://lasthopeanimalrescue.org/private-no-kill-shelters/

Bless her for being a true friend to my aunt Laura and for her love of animals and for her long life!

Betty was the neighbor and good friend of my grandfather and step-grandmother for many, many years, and was a neighbor & friend to my mom and me for a couple of years, as well. When Betty told me that her first name was actually "Grace" I remember thinking that I understood why she preferred being called "Betty"---"Grace" just didn't seem to fit. Betty was quiet, down-to-earth and unassuming. What I remember most about her is her love for animals (in particular her adorable dogs) which is something she had in common not only with my mom & me, but especially with my grandfather and step-grandmother. It's probably one of the reasons they got along so well. One day, I heard someone talking outside and when I looked out the window, I saw Betty sitting on the side steps, quietly talking to our cat, Sunday (whom we cared for after my step-grandmother passed away). She was commenting on Sunday's new collar and the fact that she had gained some weight. I didn't know Betty well, but she seemed to have a positive outlook on life. When my step-grandmother passed away, I remember her telling me at the viewing not to wear "so much black." Once, when we were talking about my late brother, who had come to visit my grandfather in the 1970s, she said she remembered his visit and enthusiastically recalled "I liked that boy!" I was very sorry to hear of Betty's passing. I will always remember her driving away, with her sweet dogs in the back seat, invariably with one of them sticking their head out the window.
