Susan Raht Lawrence, 75, of Apex, NC formerly of Annandale, VA, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 2, 2017.
A native of Waukesha, WI Susan graduated from the University of Denver in 1963 and went on to get her Masters in Counseling from Virginia Tech. Susan was also selected to participate in an educational studies program at Yale University. As an Air force wife, Susan lived in many places in the U.S. as well Saudi Arabia and was fortunate to travel often which she loved to do.
Susan retired from Westlawn Elementary School in Falls Church, Va in 2010 where she worked with children first as an ESL teacher and most recently as a guidance counselor. She touched a countless number of lives throughout her teaching career and working with families throughout the community. Susan made it her life's work helping others no matter how big or small the need. Susan was a life long learner and continued to educate herself always taking on new challenges herself to learn new things and take on new adventures. Most of all Susan loved her family. Her three grandchildren were her pride and joy. She never missed an opportunity to be with them whether it was to attend a school function, a sporting event, or a birthday.
Susan was an avid gardner, traveler, and lover of dogs. She often participated in programs at both Holly Springs and Cary senior centers.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert J. Raht and Elizabeth D. Raht.
Susan is survived by her loving sons, Michael of LaCrosse, WI and Brad (Honie) of Apex, NC; her sister Sarah Gjelsten of Libertyville, Ill; and her three grandchildren, Griffen, Jackson, and Grace.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials in Susan's name be made to the Fisher House Foundation.

Susan was a dear friend and neighbor. She helped me to adjust to life at Westlawn, and then we sewed and knitted together, swam together and did so many fun things together.
