Darleen Olehy Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 27, 2016.

Darleen Joan Wakefield Olehy, passed away on Sunday, October 23, 2016 at the age of 81.
She was born November 14, 1934 to her parents Raymond Guy Wakefield and Naomi Salazar Wakefield in Los Angeles, California.
Darleen spent her early childhood living in the Florida Keys, Bremerton, Washington and finally San Diego, California where her Father was stationed with the U.S. Navy for 30 years.
Darleen graduated from Kearney High School in San Diego, California in 1953. There she was active in swimming and the drill team. After graduation, Darleen went to work at the Walker Scott Department Store. In 1954, she met David Albert Olehy, a student at USC, home visiting his parents and helping his Father install draperies at the Wakefield home. They married January 15, 1955.
While her husband worked and finished college at San Diego State University, Darleen stayed home with her growing family. While in San Diego, she joined the San Diego Philatelic Society collecting stamps and served as the president. She won several awards for her stamp exhibits on Egyptian history and other countries from the San Diego State Fair.
In 1967, Dave and Darleen moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho, where her husband accepted a job at the Chem Plant at the INEL.
Darleen was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she was a deaconess and sang in the choir. She designed and made several of the large banners that hang in the church today.
Once all her children were in school, Darleen went to work at Peggie's Gifts and Crafts. She was well known for 18 years for teaching craft classes for the Girl Scouts and various Church organizations. She was a Girl Scout Leader and helped in sewing costumes for the Idaho Falls Ballet's Nutcracker productions, which the Girls Scouts participated in.
Darleen was a Past Matron of Liberty Chapter #51, Order of Eastern Star in Shelley, Idaho several times and was currently a member of Henrietta Chapter #21 in Idaho Falls. She served on numerous state committees over the years and was a Grand Officer for the Grand Chapter of Idaho, Order of Eastern Star in 1979-1980. She served as the Guardian of Bethel #59, International Order of Job's Daughters in Idaho Falls as well. She and her husband, David enjoyed many years of traveling around the state of Idaho and the rest of country for Eastern Star and Masonic events.
Darleen was an avid reader, especially if it was Native American history and Westerns. Her many other hobbies over the years included gardening, cross country skiing, fishing, camping, bowling and especially golfing at Aspen Acres near the Tetons. She and her husband also enjoyed traveling and renting the same vacation home with dear friends in Hawaii several times over the years. She had a love for dogs and fostered a few in recent years.
Darleen is survived by her Daughters, Sue Ellen Finney (Richard) of Kennewick, WA; Jo Lynn Holm (Thomas) of Salt Lake City, UT and Sons, Brett A. Olehy of Idaho Falls, ID and Matthew G. Olehy (Laynna) of Brentwood, CA. She is also survived by Nine Grandchildren and Thirteen Great-Grandchildren with one more due on Christmas Day. I met Darlene Olehy, when I was joining Eastern Star. Liberty Chapter # 51. She was called Mama Olehy. She was really awesome. She taught me many things. Helped me learn things I needed to know. Always there if you had a question. Darlene would try to find the answer. Darlene had a beautiful spirit that surround her. To know her, that she is happy being back with hubby and her parents. Mama Olehy we love and miss you.
