Virginia Martin Brown, our precious mother, passed away peacefully on February 23, 2017 after 95 full and wonderful years.
She was born and raised in Okmulgee, Oklahoma to Ouida and Roy Martin. She attended Okmulgee High School and was a delegate to the first Girls State before graduating in 1940. Upon graduation, she attended Oklahoma A&M. She met the cutest houseboy, Barney Brown Jr., in the Chi Omega house, married him in 1942 and thus began a 75 year romance.
After settling in Oklahoma City she became the quintessential homemaker of her era who always "freshened up" before Barney came home from work and wore an apron while preparing a home cooked meal each night. Handwritten letters were sent weekly to her kids in college and her mother in Arkansas. All activities were recorded on the family calendar which she kept close at hand. Once the kids were off to college, she too was out the door-at 5 a.m. to swim laps at the Y and she continued this well into her 90's.
The family home of 53 years was a place where everyone was welcome. She hosted garden clubs, book clubs, bridge groups and bible studies as well as her children's church and school activities. Family holidays were her specialty,
Christmas in particular. It was a 2 day extravaganza culminating in the "equalizer", a tradition to balance the gift giving.
Her "Happy Place" for close to 60 years was The United Methodist Church of Nichols Hills. A woman of deep faith, she served on every committee but her true gifts were used on the Care Committee. She was a blessing to many shut-ins with her note writing, visits and calls. "Their" pew will be empty but Barney and Virginia will be long remembered as good and faithful servants.
Having been blessed with a long beautiful life she leaves the love of travel to her son Steve (Lora), and daughter Becky Johnston (Brad). Her giggle will be cherished by her grandchildren Matt (Kristen), Meredith (Rand), Ryan (Jessica), Megan (Dan) and Rachel. It is hoped that Mac and Meme's dancing legacy will be carried on by their great grandchildren Bella, Micah, William, Adeline, Anna, Elin, Reece, Hollis and Syms.
Her beloved Barney preceded her in death exactly five weeks earlier on January 19, 2017. We are certain he welcomed her with open arms and a twirl on the dance floor to the tune of "New York New York."
The family would like to thank Mary, Melisha, Nesha and Patsy for their compassionate care.
A celebration of life service will be held on Monday, February 27 at 11:00 a.m., United Methodist Church of Nichols Hills. In lieu of flowers remembrances may be made to their church at 1212 Bedford Drive Nichols Hills, Oklahoma 73116.
