Marjorie Ruth Sullivan, aged 92, passed away peacefully on February 23 at Presbyterian Hospital, following a brief illness. She was born in Dallas on December 16, 1924, and lived her entire life in the hometown she loved. Growing up in Oak Cliff, she attended John Q. Mills Elementary, Boude Storey Junior High, and Adamson High School. As a teenager, her musical talents led her to sing in the choir at Tyler Street Methodist Church and to perform professionally in an all-girl accordion quartet. She matriculated at North Texas State Teachers College in Denton, majoring in music studies. Shortly after landing a secretarial job at the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, she met and married US Navy veteran and newly-minted bank examiner Thomas Royce Sullivan of Red Oak. Their loving marriage lasted until Mr. Sullivan’s death in 1984. The Sullivans moved to Lake Highlands in 1958, were founding members of Lake Highlands Methodist Church, and lived in the same pink brick house on Livenshire Drive for more than 50 years, until Marjorie decided to downsize and move into White Rock Court several years ago. She put her musical talents to good use by teaching piano lessons to generations of neighborhood children. She was an excellent seamstress and gardener, loved watching old movies and Dallas Summer Musicals, was active in the Dallas Federation of Women’s Club, and for years served as a volunteer tutor in local elementary schools. While in the Women’s Club, she led an effort that collected and delivered over 20,000 books to low-income day care centers and pre-schools through Project Soar. Survivors include her children Linda Sullivan Baity of Santa Barbara, CA; Nancy Ann Sullivan of Little Rock, AR; Michael Patrick Sullivan of Dallas; Thomas Richard Sullivan of Plano; Patrick Alan Sullivan of Canton, GA; and foster son John Thomas Erskine of Colorado Springs, CO. Also daughters-in-law Diane Shropshire Sullivan and Jennifer Smith Sullivan; grandchildren Matthew Baity, Cameron Baity, Nathan Sullivan, Corry Sullivan, Travis Sullivan, Tyler Sullivan, Ashley Sullivan, Jeremy Patterson, Grace Sullivan, Becca Sullivan and Sarah Sullivan; great-grandchildren Ryan Rho-Baity, Noah Rho-Baity, Olive Baity, Patrick Sullivan, Riley Sullivan, and Keelyn Sullivan; nieces Regina Hazard, Katie Wood, Cee Timmons, nephew Neth Sullivan, and cousins Barbara Ferguson, Shirley Ferguson, Bob Whiting, Phyllis Walden and Doreen Ward. Marjorie was pre-deceased by her husband, her parents Thomas Lafayette Wood and Ollie Belle Rogers, her brother Robert Thomas Wood, her sister-in-law Evelyn Wood, and her daughter-in-law Diana Wren Sullivan, and cousins Anna Mae Ferguson, Troy Whiting, and Ann Whiting. The family invites visitors to join them on Monday evening, February 27, from 6:00-8:00 pm at Laurel-land Funeral Home in Oak Cliff to reconnect and reminisce. A memorial at Laurel-land Chapel will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, February 28, followed by a graveside good-bye. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a generous donation to Dallas Arboretum—one of Marjorie’s favorite places on earth!

While I am disappointed that I cannot attend, if I had a few words or a eulogy to offer on Marjorie's behalf, it would go something like this: In my mind's eye, as if through an opaque film, I see myself standing there after the funeral service, feeling somewhat detached and out of place. Suddenly, someone touches my elbow - I turn, and it's an elderly Texas woman I've never seen before. She asks me, "How did you know Marjorie? Are you a relative?" I reply, with a great swell of pride, saying, "No, not a related, but she was a good, good friend of mine...and although she didn't really even know me at the time, she saved my life...almost 50 years ago.

Anne Elizabeth & I have fond memories of Marjorie and our mother, Mary Margaret Roberson, working together at TFWC. They were so loyal & faithful to each other and their Lord. Marjorie was always so much fun to be around. Sorry that we will both be out of town during the service, but our thoughts & prayers are with you all.

When I think of Marge, I think of her happy voice and her twinkling eyes (sometimes twinged with mischief maybe?). She and my mother, Margaret Taylor, taught Sunday School together for years at Lake Highlands Methodist and Marge remained a kind and caring friend throughout my mom's final years. I have experienced first hand that her example of faithful friendship was followed by her son Tommy, who has been a lifelong friend with my brother Jeff, especially during his final year. So, along with love and sympathy, I send heartfelt gratitude to the Sullivan family.
