Elisa Blauvelt Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 28, 2017.

Elisa Cabre Blauvelt died in Ormond Beach, Florida on February 25, 2017. Elisa was born in West Palm Beach in August of 1927. Her parents, Madalin, who was born in Barcelona, and Santiago, who was born in Majorca, Spain, moved with their young daughter and son, Louis, to Tampa when Elisa was a toddler. It was in Tampa where she grew up, married and raised her family, and it will be in Tampa where she will be laid to rest.

Lisa was gifted with a beautiful singing voice and she studied opera, as a Mezzo-soprano, at a very young age. She also sang with the U.S.O. at many of Tampa’s social clubs and ballrooms, entertaining military personnel who flooded the city during World War II. One of those service men was a “dashing young airman: who was stationed at MacDill Air Force Base. His name was Ted Blauvelt and he was from New York. They met at the Florida State Fair and it was said to be love at first sight. She gave up her dream of singing professionally to become his wife and start a family. They were married in 1946 and were together 56 years until his death in 2002. After raising their children, they most enjoyed traveling often to Europe with Elisa’s brother, Louis, and his wife, Lisa’s dear sister-in-law, Pat.

Elisa is survived by her daughter, Diana Sharp and her husband, Walt, of Sylva, North Carolina; her son, Teddy Blauvelt and his partner, David, of Ormond Beach; her only grandchild, Ryan McKenzie and his wife Maraya of Clearwater; cousins, nephews, nieces, and sisters-in-law. Also surviving Elisa is her half-sister, Rosalia (Rosita) Fornes, the legendary Cuban/Latin-American stage and screen actress who resides in Havana and Miami. The two sisters finally united only five years ago. Although raised apart and having no contact with each other during most of their lives, both sisters shared a common bond through their love of music and both sisters had remarkably beautiful singing voices.

A private service will take place at the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Tampa. Donations in Elisa’s memory may be made, and gratefully accepted by Brookdale A.L.F. Employee Fund, 550 Wilmette Ave., Ormond Beach, Florida 32174.
