Jack Hufford Albert of Edgewood Summit in Charleston, died Friday, March 10 at Thomas Memorial Hospital after a short illness. Jack was born in Charleston, WV, on November 16, 1926, son of the late William Frank and Ruth Ella Gilley Albert. He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Betty E. (Totsy) Albert, sister’s Jean Albert, Louise Namey, Ernestine Foote, Nancy Brown and brother Wm. Frank (Corky) Albert.
Surviving in addition to his three sons; Dr. Jack H. Albert, Jr.(Betty), Delafield, Wisconsin; Frederick Ray Albert, Charleston, West Virginia; and Timothy Allen Albert(Debbie), Ashland, Kentucky; are four grandchildren, Matthew S. Albert, Madison, Wisconsin; Ashley Davis, Charlotte, North Carolina; Amanda Hopper, Ironton, Ohio and Sarah Albert Wears, Deston, Kentucky; Thirteen great grandchildren. He is also survived by brothers, James Albert, Jensen Beach, Florida; Michael Albert, St. Albans, West Virginia, and sisters, Lois Spurlock, Ellijay, Georgia; and Carol Smolen, Anderson, South Carolina.
Albert was a member of the greatest generation serving his nation in WWII in the Army Air Corps and the Medic Corps. He was a chemist by profession, working for E. I. DuPont de Nemours at the Belle Works Plant in a career spanning 44 years. He was active in his community as former President of his Lions Club, service as a Boy Scout leader to include assistant scout master in WWII until well into his 70’s as scout master, and member of his local scout board. Some regarded Jack as a bit of an activist, often bringing conscious thought to his community with well written newspaper editorials. Originally appointed by West Virginia Governor Gaston Caperton, Jack was still serving on the West Virginia Commission for Housing and Manufacturing, having most recently been reappointed to a six year term. He was an extraordinary fly fisherman and enjoyed and protected the beauty of God’s abundant nature.
Jack Albert had been a certified lay speaker in the United Methodist Church and provided ministerial leadership to a number of rural pastorates in West Virginia as well as being Chaplain for Thomas Memorial Hospital. Pastoral ministry was a call on his life, and most recently he provided monthly worship services to his friends at Edgewood Summit. Always a student of the scriptures, Jack Albert is respected for his thoughtful teaching and guidance, often remembered for his dedicated and diligent preparation for lessons and sermons. His commitment to his faith showed us all what it really meant to “walk the talk.” His son’s tell us he died as he lived, rejoicing in the loving grace of God.
Jack was a 1944 graduate of DuPont High School and studied in later years at both West Virginia State University, and Duke University. A consummate student he was particularly interested in his family heritage. His fourth generation grandfather, Jacob Allen Albert, Sr. was a Revolutionary War soldier who wintered at Washington’s Pennsylvania encampment, making Albert a direct descendant of a Survivor of Valley Forge; an honor for which he was especially proud.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 14, at Christ Church United Methodist, 1221 Quarrier Street, Charleston, West Virginia from 6:00 until 8:00 pm. A celebration of the life of Jack Hufford Albert will be officiated by the Rev. Dr. Jay Parkins at the Church at 1:00 pm Wednesday, March 15, 2017. Interment will follow at Cunningham Memorial Park in St. Albans with full military honors.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers, one might memorialize the life of their Dad, by contributing to one of the ministries of Christ Church United Methodist.

Fred, I just had a memory that I will share...years ago you father took his scout troop to Ansted with my Marmet T-77. We stayed at my farm in the barn during a snowstorm. Some of my parents would not drive to get their kids so you dad offered to help with that. He was a good man. May God Bless you and your family. Stan and Shirley White
