Barney Rodriquez Obituary

Bonifacio "Barney" Rodriguez (92) Surrounded by his three loving daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, passed on peacefully on Friday, March 10, 2017, at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa. He was born to his parents, Jose Atanacio Rodriguez and Leonides Reyes on May 14, 1924 in Victoria, Texas where he was raised. After the early death of his mother, his father took his daughters and sons to Lamesa, Texas, to pick cotton for a living. Barney was a sheep shearer at the age of 19 when he was called to duty into the Army Air Force as a radio operator / gunman on a B24 Liberator. While defending our great country in the Pacific Theater during WWII as a decorated Technical Sergeant, he was also awarded a 4 OLC Purple Heart for his sacrifices. He was honorably discharged on October 9, 1945. On April 1, 1946, Barney married Mary Alice Tijerina. They were married 63 years. Barney was a successful entrepreneur, making a good life for his wife and three daughters, Sylvia, Margaret, and Dolores. He was hard working and dedicated to his family, his church, and his community. He was ordained in 1980 as a Deacon of the Catholic Churches of the South Side serving at Saint Anthony's and Saint Joseph's in Odessa, Texas. He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Alice Rodriguez and granddaughter, Laura E. Farias Alvarado; also, his parents, his three brothers Marcos, Jose, and Doroteo "Danny" Rodriguez and four sisters Anastacia R. Delgado, Maria R. Robles, Cecilia R. Rodriguez, and Lorenza Rodriguez. He is survived by his daughters, Sylvia Rodriguez Farias of Odessa, Margaret Rodriguez of Rutherfordton, N.C., and Dolores Rodriguez Renteria and husband Nazario of Odessa; grandchildren, Melissa Ramirez and husband Felipe of Austin, Texas, Evette S. Guerrero and husband Alex of Rutherfordton, N.C., Melanie F. Ceballos and husband Anthony of Odessa, Barney E. Velasquez and wife Brenda of Odessa, Emily D. Hinojos of Spindale, N.C., Miriam M. Ramirez and husband Israel of Austin, Texas, Adrian N. Renteria of Odessa, Symela J. Haun of Odessa, and Rochel O. Nelson and husband Jerome of Odessa; 16 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren. He was the last to pass of his siblings. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m., Tuesday, March 14, 2017, at Odessa Funeral Home. A private family committal and interment will be conducted at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene.
