Stephen A. Pogonelski of Old Saybrook died on March 10, 2017 at Yale New Haven Hospital after a brief illness. He was born in New Haven on August 26,1943 to the late Stephen and May (Orzechowski) Pogonelski. He was the loving husband of Carlene Johnson Pogonelski. He leaves two sons Todd Pogonelski and his wife Christine of Middletown and Chad Pogonelski and his fiancé Emily Randall of Portland. Also, his special blessing, grandson Tristan. He also leaves his sister Barbara Gladish and husband Andrew of Avon, Ohio and many beloved nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his brother Richard Pogonelski.
After graduating from Hamden High School in 1961 he served 3 years in the US Army. He retired from the Eastman Kodak Company after 28 years. Steve loved spending time outdoors. He was an avid hunter, fly fisherman, and golfer. His favorite hobby was photography. What brought him the most joy was spending time with his "little buddy" Tristan!
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Calling hours will take place at Swan Funeral Home 1224 Boston Post Rd. Steve and I graduated from St. Peter's School in New Haven Ct. 1957. We were very close friends and played on the basketball team together. We hung around alot and did alot together. After graduation, he moved to Hamden, he went to Hamden High and I went to Hillhouse High in New Haven. We lost touch I saw him again when I entered the Army in April, 1964, he was in the Army also working out the US Army processing center on Chapel St. in New Haven. We spoke for awhile before I left and that was the last time I saw him. I was in for 3 years. Steve was a great kid and a great friend when we were in grammar school. I did think of him at times over the years but I never looked him up. Over the past 10 years or so, there have been what they call "Hill Section Reunions". I have attended some of them, always meeting some people from the past, the 1957 class of St. Peter's, but Steve had never shown up. I know he will be missed and I wish I had looked him up in the past.If his wife or an immediate member of his family reads this, I would like them to give me a call at 203-467-7335.

I went to the Crystal Mall last weekend and couldn't help but think of Steve as I walked past Sears. Years back I'd go visit him with a treat ...a cup of coffee... and just chat. He'd smile and take a little walk with me just to shoot the breeze. Somehow he was always due for a break. :) He was always so excited to find a final clearance deal in his department...that man was a true bargain hunter!
I know he loved his family very much. My thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathy go out to you all.

Condolences to the Pogonelski Family.....Steve was probably the best baseball player I ever saw growing up ..then i became friends and teammates with his brother Richie...and after that worked with steves dad for over 15 years at Detroit Steel...who kept me abreast of the sons he was so proud of......I admired them all.....my prayers are with you all at this most difficult of times......God Bless!

Carlene, I am so sorry for your loss. As you well know Steve and I were best friends growing up in Hamden. We remained best friends. One of my fondest memories are the months we spent together in Army boot camp. The five desperado's Steve Pogonelski, Dave Kolodecik, Wayne Grabowski, Jack Scelzo and I.
