On March 13, 2017, Lieutenant Commander Robert V. Mayer was relieved of his final command at his home in Whitwell, Tennessee.
Robert, a native of Yardville, New Jersey, proudly served his country for 30 years in the United States Navy. There, he met his bride to be Telegrapher's Mate Marietta Faulkner Bramble of Nashville, Tennessee. Robert and Marietta were married for 72 years.
The Commander served in the Korean War, World War II and Vietnam as a member of the elite Silver Eagles Aviation Pilots. During his service, the Commander was honored with the Korean Service Medal, American Campaign Military Medal, the Navy Unit Commendation Medal, the American Defense Medal, the World War II Victory Military Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Viet Nam Service Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal, the Navy Good Conduct Medal, and the Antarctic Service Medal. In addition, after he volunteered for and successfully completed a suicidal mercy mission to Antarctica to extract a wounded sailor from Antarctica during total darkness in 1965, he was honored by having an Antarctic Mountain range named after him. It is known as Mayer Crags.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents Elgin R. Mayer and Helen Simpkins Mayer of Yardville, New Jersey, his brother Keith Mayer of Yardville, New Jersey, and his beloved wife Marietta Faulkner Bramble Mayer of Nashville, Tennessee.
Robert is survived by his oldest daughter Lynne A. Mayer and her partner Meg Jones of Whitwell, Tennessee; his youngest daughter Barbara Mayer and her partner Ashley Eller of Lenoir City, Tennessee; and his grandchildren Madelynne Harrison, Hayden Harrison, Andrew Harrison and Carter Harrison of Athens, Tennessee. He is also survived by his sister Gene Mayer Neeld of Riegelville, Pennsylvania, a brother E. Richard Mayer of New Jersey.
All services will be private.
