Edward Effertz Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 15, 2017.

Edward Effertz

Ed Effertz was born in Chicago on April 10, 1924, and passed away on March 14, 2017 in Greenwood, Indiana. He served our country as an infantryman and platoon sergeant in World War II. During the Battle of the Bulge, Ed's company was cut off from the rest of the First Army and ran out of ammunition. They fixed bayonets and fought for a few more days, but were ultimately captured. Ed endured nearly six months in a German POW camp before being liberated. You can hear more about Ed's experiences during the war in his own words at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNvf6Udhmio.

Returning to Chicago after the war, Ed went to work for International Harvester. During nearly forty years with the company, he worked his way up from machinist to superintendent of the engine division.

Ed was a committed Christian who taught Sunday school for more than 30 years and at one time or another held every leadership position on the church council.

In his retirement, Ed enjoyed traveling the world with his wife, Rose. His favorite trip was to Jerusalem; he also really loved Alaska.

He was a lifelong Chicago sports fan who, at the age of 92, stayed up all night watching the Cubs clinch the 2016 World Series.

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Rose; daughters Debi (Jim) Burns and Deni (Kit) Effertz Kraabel; son-in-law Ernie Torkilsen; grandchildren Erin (Jeremy) Burns-Tidmore, Brittany Burns, Megan (Tony) Durbin, Kody Kraabel, Kadie Kraabel, David (Michele) Torkilsen, and Tim (Claudia) Torkilsen; and great-grandchildren Matthew, Luke, and Conner Torkilsen. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Darlene, and first wife, Irene.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 am on April 22 at Resurrection Lutheran Church, 445 E Stop 11 Rd., Indianapolis, IN, 46227. A gathering will follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Resurrection Lutheran Church's Memorial Fund.

There will also be an additional Memorial Service on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at Light of Christ Lutheran Church, 100 Hanson Rd., Algonquin, Illinois 60102. Those attending at the Light of Christ can make donations to the church in lieu of flowers.
