Donald Bohn Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 17, 2017.

Donald B. Bohn, Sr., our father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend passed away at home on Friday, March 17, 2017 surrounded by his loving family. He was 93 years old. He was born and raised in New Orleans to George W. Bohn, Sr. and Kathleen McHugh Bohn. Donald was a man who loved his family dearly, a generous man, and a man who stood by his word. He was a member of several organizations and clubs in the New Orleans and the Metairie area. Donald attended St. Rita School, Jesuit High School and Loyola University. He was a devout fan and supporter of the LSU Tigers and was a lifelong New York Yankees fan. He served in the United States Coast Guard from 1942-1945 serving six months in the Pacific during WWII. His career was devoted entirely to the family Ford dealership his father began in the mid 1920’s, Bohn Motor Co. He later moved to Dick Bohn Ford in Gretna and lastly to Don Bohn Ford in Harvey. Donald was very proud of the dealership, and enjoyed having his three sons working alongside him until his retirement in 1988. Donald loved spending his summers in his motor home traveling and exploring North America with his wife and children.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, George W. Bohn, Jr., Richard J. Bohn, Sr., C. Robert Bohn, Sr., and his children’s Mother, Kathleen “Kit” Zetzmann. He is survived by his seven children, Donald, Jr. (Jill), Kathleen Baldwin (Fred), Priscilla Dalton (John), Scott (Ashley), Donna Marie Patten (JP), Theresa Godman (Jim) and Van (Sammie) and his wife Mary G. Bohn and four stepchildren. “Gheeyee” is also survived by his ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, to whom he passed his joy of life, work ethic, and sense of humor.

Donald has said goodbye to many of his friends, yet many are left to cherish his memories.

Friends and family are invited to attend Funeral Mass in the Chapel of Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home on Monday, March 20, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. until Mass time. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Jesuit High School 4133 Banks Street New Orleans, LA 70119 or the charity of your choice.

The family would like to sincerely thank Debbie Bourne, his dear friend and assistant, as well as caretakers Benton, Ann, Jackie, Augusta, Hospice Compassus, Dr. Leonard Kancher and Dr. Luis Arencibia for their compassionate care of our dad.

Except for my husband, Mr. Donald was the best boss ever. He was a gentle man, a man who knew what he wanted, very wise and oh so kind and considerate. I am going to miss my friend, my boss. Though I knew this day was coming, it is still very hard to say goodbye to someone who has been a part of my life for the last 30 years. Praying for peace and comfort during this time and for the days to come for his family.

As granddaughters to Mary Bohn, growing up, "Gheehee" was the grandfather we knew and loved. When we would visit Mississippi, he would be waiting to slip us a King Leo peppermint stick after our mother said no and he made sure the ice cream machine was always churning creole cream cheese ice cream. We remember his love of Louis Armstrong and classic Hollywood movies. Most of all, we are grateful for his example. He was a hard worker, a family man and a loving husband to our grandmother Mary. The Lovett girls are sending all their love and prayers to the Bohn family.

It is with a heavy heart and tears in my eyes that I write this today.
The news was just as much a shock as losing my own Dad.
Growing up with everyone is still a highlight of my life.
Even though I have not seen Mr. Bohn in a number of years, I still
carry fond memories.
Clair & I are at our Florida home but will try our best to make it to
Metairie on Monday.
God bless
