ELIZABETH (BETTY) BLACKMER CHILDS passed away on February 8, 2017. She was born in Jacksonville, Florida, on June 23, 1920. The daughter of Eva Renfroe Blackmer and Walter Steele Blackmer, Jr., she grew up in Salisbury, N.C. Since 2002 she has been a resident of Ginger Cove in Annapolis.
After attending Sweet Briar College, she married Eugene Mackall Childs, then an engineer for Pan American Airways. They were stationed in Brazil for four years and then transferred to LaGuardia Field in New York for one year before returning to Annapolis where they lived at the family home on the South River while Mackall pursued a legal profession.
She was president of The Federated Garden Clubs of Maryland, The Hammond Harwood House Association, and the Four Rivers Garden Club. She served as chair of the Central Atlantic Regional Conference of the National Council of State Garden Clubs, was on the Board of the Junior League of Baltimore, The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of Maryland as secretary, and served on the Board of the Hospital Auxiliary.
She was a member of the Altar Guild of St. Anne’s Church and taught Sunday school there for several years. Betty and Mackall built and enjoyed for many years a vacation home on Tortola, BVI. She flew with her husband and earned a “pinch hitter’s” pilot’s license. Her interests were flying, travel, bridge, gardening, water sports and reading.
She is survived by three children, Dryden Childs Murck of St. Simon’s, Georgia, Walter Steele Blackmer Childs of Cape Charles, Virginia, and Eugene Mackall Childs, Jr. of Richmond, Virginia, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at All Hallows Church (“The Chapel” on Central Avenue) in Davidsonville, on May 6 at 11:00 with inurnment immediately following. A reception after the service will be held at Ginger Cove in the Friendship Hall.
In lieu of flowers, Betty asked that contributions be made to The Federated Garden Clubs of Maryland, Inc., 4915 Greenspring Avenue, Baltimore, Md. 21209.
