COLUMBIA - Belle Lavisky Jewler, wife of Allen “Jerry” Jewler and mother of Melissa Welsh of Atlanta, Ga. and Scott Jewler of San Jose, Calif., died between midnight Sunday and 1:00 a.m. Monday, March 27, 2017. Belle’s proudest achievement, among many, was her active support at Beth Shalom Synagogue, Columbia: the place of worship for her parents, the late Emma and Mike Lavisky, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins; among them, Alan and Charlotte Kahn of Columbia, Judy and Henry Goldman of Charlotte, Debbie and Mike Rubin of Chapel Hill. She was predeceased by her aunts and uncles, Brenda and Chuck Meltsner, Katie and Irwin Kahn, Peggy and Benny Kurtz, and Eddie and Belle Bogen.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at Beth Shalom Synagogue, 5827 N. Trenholm Road, Columbia, South Carolina. Burial will follow at House of Peace Cemetery on Whaley Street, just down the hill from Pickens Street. Evening services will be held at Beth Shalom Synagogue at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 190 Knox Abbott Drive, Cayce, SC 29033.
Those who grew up with Belle, as well as those who came to know her as an adult (as her husband of 56 years did) would know a joy that radiated towards others, especially her closest friends. But Belle also had a serious side, which allowed her to engage in numerous projects and follow them to completion. She was, in a word, resplendent, introspective, and generous in every way.
When Belle and Jerry married in 1960, they moved to Washington, D.C., Jerry's birthplace, and soon realized they longed to go back down south. That dream was fulfilled in 1968 when Jerry accepted a position in Charlotte, and again in 1970 when they moved to Greenville, and spent two glorious years in that dynamic city. In 1972 they moved to Columbia, and Belle was once again home and near her family as Jerry began what turned out to be a 28-year career as a professor at the University of South Carolina.
It was fate that brought them back to Belle’s hometown. Many will miss her, but all should feel serene that her pain and suffering over the last several months is gone for good. She made the world a brighter place for those who knew her best. She was an original and she and Jerry loved and learned from each other, which is what life is all about. She will be missed by many.

Jerry, this is much belated, but I am so sorry to hear about you losing your life companion. I looked you up because I just talked to my students about gender bias and what I learned from you about the topic when we co-facilitated U101 many, many moons ago. I think of you often, friend and wish you the best.

Sally and I just learned of Belle's passing. I know she had a full life because she touched me first as one of my students at the University of South Carolina and as spouse of my colleague, Jerry, Jerry, you and Belle shared such a rich life together and friends aplenty ready to console you now.

I was so sad to read the Obituaries on Wednesday about Belle. She has been a very special friend since she worked at Dutch Square. Seeing Melissa and Scott give the eulogy at the funeral was very special...Belle would have been so proud! She loved her children very much. I will continue to pray for all of you for God to give you strength at this difficult time. I will always have a special place in my heart for Belle.

I recall enjoying times with both Belle and Jerry, back when I was in Graduate School at the University of SC. Belle was a lot of fun to be around and both Belle and Jerry helped me "grow up" and get myself ready for a career in advertising and marketing. Now, forty-three years later, these memories are still with me. Belle was a special lady - and she and Jerry remain very special to me. My very best to the family and loved ones.

Dear Jerry, Melissa & Scott
Belle was my forever special and loving friend. When we moved to Columbia, S.C.
in 1975 she was my first friend.
She was always there for me.
My beautiful 50th Birthday party, and our Daughter, Beth's bridal shower.
I could call her and she would be with me in minutes. She is no longer in pain, and I am sure is very busy in her new role in Heaven helping everyone and buying new beautiful purses.

You were both such good friends to Jim and me when we lived briefly in Columbia, for which we are always grateful. Belle took me under her wing, especially when I was ill, and then welcomed me to live with you while I finished my courses. It was a wonderful period in our lives, made more so by the rich experience of knowing you and Belle. She was a strong, brave, and beautiful person and we loved her dearly.

Dear Family,
What a great lady. I had the privilege to work with her at Beth shalom and fortunate to have her as a patient. She was so well respected on the Synagogue board and a role model for us young members as we became active at Beth Shalom. I always enjoyed seeing her and having great discussions with such a smart lady. We all will miss her smiling face.
May her memory be for a blessing!
Sincerely:
David Lovit
