Annie Monroe Nolen, 84, a longtime resident of East Hartford, passed late Monday night, March 27, 2017 at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, CT. She was born in Thomasville, GA, one of twelve children, to the late Benjamin Monroe Sr. and Mary (Revels) Monroe.
Annie graduated from Douglas High School in Thomasville. She relocated to Hartford, CT in 1950 where she met the love of her life Cephus Nolen Sr. They were married on January 25, 1957 and recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
Annie retired from Travelers Insurance Co.of Hartford in 1992 after working there for over 30 years. She enjoyed bingo, Foxwoods, soap operas, pecans & peanuts, Boston Celtics and the NY Giants.
Annie provided guidance as a foster parent to numerous boys in need for approximately 15 years.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Cephus Sr., her son Cephus Jr. and his wife Sally, two daughters: Yvonne and Karen, three grandchildren: Amy and her husband Paul Milholen, Michael and Kelly Nolen, five great grandchildren, sister Alberta Hester and George Monroe of Thomasville, GA, and brother Henry and his wife Doris Monroe of Hartford.
Annie was the mother of the late Michael W. Nolen. She is predeceased by sisters Viola Monroe King, Lula Mae Wiggs, Stella and Zora Monroe; and brothers Benjamin Jr., Rev. Dembo Sr., Isadore and John Monroe.
Donations can be made in Annie's memory to a charity of the donor's choice.
Friends and family are invited to attend a period of visitation on Sunday April 2, 2017 from 12-2pm at the Newkirk & Whitney Funeral Home, 318 Burnside Ave.., East Hartford CT 06108. Funeral services will begin on Monday, April 3 at 9am at the funeral home, followed immediately at 10am by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Rose Church, 33 Church St., East Hartford.
