I worked with Joe on the Kennedy. I have a zillion memories. From the hockey games, softball games, to Santa's Helper in France.
Being MM's, we worked in spaces throughout the ship, responsible for a myriad of equipment. Joe pretty much knew it all. I remember a time in the Mediterranean, he had to do a repair on an aircraft elevator. In the dark of night, underway. Kinda sorta under the elevator. He just said, give me a flashlight.
He was a great shipmate, and a great man. I count myself lucky to have had him as a friend. I'll miss our "talks" about the Flyers and Bruins. I will miss you, my friend....

Joe,
Your family, loved ones, friends, and co-workers will all miss your full-bodied fun and energetic way of living life. I thought that sharing a memory I have from long ago would be appropriate. It is more about your sports acumen than your great work skills, or any truly hilarious exploits...of which you had many.
If you recall Joe, the USS JOHN F. KENNEDY had two semi-professional (term used loosely here) Softball Teams, the 'A' Team and the 'B' Team. They traveled and played teams within the city of Norfolk. Auxiliaries Division (known as A-Gang not to be confused with 'a gang'), on the other hand, scrapped together a bunch of misfit players and competed on the base between other divisions, departments, and even other ships. So...the ship (prompted by the 'A' team and 'B' team) decided to put together a softball tournament....and of course A-Gang competed. We beat all comers and met the 'A' Team in the finals. Throughout the season and especially during the final game, I watched you (and envied you at times) play Short Stop. You recall I was Third...and Ed was 1st Base. The most impressive display....which I still talk about today, mostly to the Little League boys I coach....was the manner in which you fielded the ball. No matter how hard it was hit to you....like a rocket, bouncing off hard uneven packed dirt, skidding, or even bending on the fly....you were like a vacuum cleaner....sucked them all up. And then the part that sticks in my mind to this day.....after calmly fielding the ball, or flying through the air to snatch it with inches to spare and dust flying off your glove and body, you would stop....look into your glove....take out the ball....inspect it....move it around a little to get your fingers properly on the threads....and then you would step calmly towards first base and fire a rocket that would crack into Ed's glove. The runner always thought he had a chance....and the ball would always arrive 1/2 to a full step in front of the runner.
And your skills were never lorded over others....a true team player....you built up others around you and made us all better. Even Tenhulzen (sp?) who never played before and was so very out of place on the field. We were a true 'team' and you were a true leader. I will miss you.
...And you were an incredible mechanic too :-)
Maybe....if it is appropriate....I will tell the story of you, Tubaca, and the fuse pullers.
My prayers for you and your family,
Ron

I would call Joe a close friend. He will be sorely missed on the ORF waterfront, as he always wanted what was best for the Navy. But he was needed to keep our Navy running strong in Heaven! And to look over the Bruins...and to play the best courses imaginable!
