COLUMBIA - Theodore Nicholas “Tadpole” Maass, 60, passed away Wednesday, April 12, 2017. The family will be receiving visitors who wish to celebrate Ted’s life from 10:30 until 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 15, 2017 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.
Ted was born September 14, 1956 in Columbia, South Carolina to the late Theodore N. Maass, Sr. and Caroline Hunter Maass. A talented artisan, specializing in custom cabinets, Ted was a friend to all who knew him. A kind- hearted gentle man who loved the simple things in life – fishing, boating, rivers, creeks and Pawley’s Island – he will be missed by all that knew him. An exceptional harmonica-playing “Big Foot” that followed his passion in restoring an antique wooden boat that he enjoyed often with his friends and family.
Surviving are his children, Theodore Nicholas Maass, III (Ryan Bailey Maass), Carl Alexander Maass and Caroline Hunter Maass; sister, Mary E. Maass; brother, James E. H. Maass (Linda Adams Maass); brother-in-law Mitch Wilkins and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews and devoted friends.
In addition to his parents, Ted was predeceased by his sister, Eliza Maass Wilkins.

I have a heart full of many great memories with "foots", "tadpole". I regret it has been so many years since I last saw him - when he took me to show me the boat he was restoring at his shop off of Rosewood Drive. He was a truly gifted artist, a gentle soul, and always shared a contagious smile. I expect I'll feel his spirit the next time I paddle the creeks behind Pawleys, where I know he loved to fish and we dug clams together. God rest your soul old friend.

Your friend in Christ God Bless
Mr. Maass, I am praying for your soul and hope to meet again in Heaven. Find your way to paradise, sir, your family and friends need you with us in the end. I remember you as the most resourceful scout leader in troop 100, always building something on campout trips. One year, you brought your jig saw table and made the cut-outs on pinewood derby cars for at least half the scouts in the troop. Thank you teaching us how to be resourceful like you.
Maass family and relatives, I am sorry for your loss, my deepest condolences. Your family is in my prayers.
