Margrette Stevenson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 20, 2017.

A celebration of Margarette Holbert Stevenson's life will be held at Park Cities Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas, on Saturday, April 29, 2017, at 1:30 P.M. A private family burial will be held at Grove Hill Memorial Park in Dallas, Texas.
Margrette joined her Savior on April 13, 2017, after a brief illness. She was born in Dallas, Texas, on March 31, 1928, to Frank Preston and Jose Stevenson. Margrette was educated in the Dallas public school system and furthered her education at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth.
Always active in her church, Margrette decided to pursue a career in church work. She began her first job at First Baptist Church, Dallas, Texas, working for
Dr. W.A. Criswell. She then worked in various positions at First Baptist Church in Tyler, Texas; Gaston Avenue Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas; East Grand Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas; First Baptist Church, Muskogee, Oklahoma; and Hillcrest Baptist Church, Dallas, Texas. She also worked with the Southern Baptist Annuity Board. In 1975, Margrette began a long career with the Baptist Home Mission Board in Atlanta, Georgia. She first served as director of employee benefits, then became director of business services, and was promoted to director of the personnel division. In 1989 she was promoted to vice president in charge of the services section of the Home Mission Board, becoming the first woman who had been selected to serve in any vice president position. Margrette remained in this position until her retirement in 1994. Always calling Dallas, Texas, her true home, she returned to this city, and joined Park Cities Baptist Church, where she was an active member for many years. In 2013, she decided to move to Cedar Park, Texas, to be close to her family. She enjoyed many tea parties and picnics with her great-great niece Madeleine.
Margrette was blessed with a gifted contralto voice. Throughout her life, she sang in the church choir, gave solo performances, and often sang duets and lead roles in special performances such as The Messiah. After moving to the Austin area, she often enjoyed performances of the Austin symphony
Margrette was preceded in death by her parents and her only sister, Dorothy Juanita Putman. She is survived by her niece Janice Foster and her husband Ricky, her great niece Heather Horvath and husband Jeff, and her beloved great-great niece Madeleine Horvath, all of Leander, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations could be made in Margrette's memory to Brother Bill's Helping Hand, 3906 N. Westmoreland, Dallas, Texas 75212 or a charity of choice.
