Robert Baker Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 13, 2017.

Robert Wirt Baker, (Bob, Bobby), passed away on April 6th, 2017, one day before his 89th birthday. He was born in New Orleans, but spent his childhood and teenage years in Hammond. His adult years were spent in Metairie, Mandeville, and Baton Rouge. He lived his last remaining years in Hammond. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Wirt Baker and Camille Conrad Moore; his sisters, Mildred Pedersen and Marion Price; and his son, Robert Wirt Baker Jr. He is survived by his wife , Marjorie Bauerle Baker; his sister Mona Moore Jackson; his children, Susan B Rue ( Melvin), Julie B Breeden, James M Baker ( Marsha), and William W Baker ( Laura); 9 grandchildren, Alexander Baker, Jennifer Rue Furse, Heather Breeden Jones, Michelle Rue Madere Gillen, Bo Breeden, Morgan Baker, Ian Baker, Russell Reynolds, and Sarah Kate Reynolds and 9 great grandchildren, Gabrielle Madere, Jack David Jones, Amelia Breeden, Henry Breeden, Isaac Furse, Camille Jones, Webber Furse, Emmerson Gillen, and Nathan Gillen.

Robert joined the Navy at age 16. He served from 1944-1946 in World War II in the South Pacific. He was an apprentice fireman on an LST (landing ship tank). He began his illustrious career in 1948 in the floor covering business, working for Brown and Damare (a wholesale flooring company). From there, in 1962, he went on to be what some might call a ' pioneer ' in that industry, including part ownership in Port Distributing in 1965, culminating with his retirement in 1993. He loved golf, traveling with Elder Hostile trips, and was an avid reader. His favorite thing to do was to sit down to dinner with his family and tell stories and jokes for hours. He was a caregiver to the sick and underprivileged. He will be missed by family, friends and all who came across his path.

Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation from 10a-12noon, on Monday, April 17th, at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, at 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. There will be a mass in the Chapel and interment following in Metairie Cemetery. Even though after many years of life and leaving behind so many precious memories, it is still very painful to lose our loved ones. Let our Heavenly Father be your source of strength, comfort, peace and hope ( Romans 15:13)

Bob was a powerful personality, loved my all he encountered. He was "Mr. Carpet" to me! Everyday I think or remember something that he taught me about people and sales. I loved his open and friendly mannerisms. Bob was very considerate and fair in the way he treated everyone. I know death is inevitable, but somehow, I thought Bob was exempt!
