MaryAnn Barger Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 24, 2017.

Mary Ann Barger, 82, passed away on April 21, 2017, in Tampa, Florida after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. Mary Ann was born in Antigo, Wisconsin to James and Marie Cavanaugh on August 12, 1934, but spent most of her life in Green Bay, Wisconsin. She graduated from Green Bay West High School in 1952, and received her Degree as a Registered Nurse (RN) from St. Agnes School of Nursing in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin in 1956. After nursing school, she married John Barger Jr., a math professor at the University of Wisconsin - Green Bay.

Mary Ann cared deeply about the mentally ill and elderly, and strived to optimize their living conditions, spirits and health. She worked for about 30 years as a nurse, most of them at the Brown County Mental Health Center. In her later years she worked at nursing homes in the Green Bay area.

Mary Ann was a compassionate caregiver who loved animals; all things Irish; classic movies; the songs of Elvis Presley, Andy Williams and Frank Sinatra; the Green Bay Packers; and above all, her children, and her grandchildren.

Mary Ann is survived by her brother, Thomas Cavanaugh, Port St Lucie, Florida; and her children, Julie (Bernie) Pallissard, Phoenix, Arizona; Mary (Pat) Schibly, Tacoma, Washington; Melanie (Mark) Garvey, Vienna, Virginia; and John III (Brooke) Barger, Tampa, Florida. She has 10 grandchildren: Olivia and Sophie Pallissard; Emily, Elizabeth and Molly Schibly; Patricia and John Garvey; and Hannah, John IV, and Emma Barger. She is preceded in death by her husband, John Barger, Jr., and her parents.

She will be remembered at Resurrection Catholic Church, 333 Hilltop Dr., Green Bay, Wisconsin on Wednesday, August 2, 2017, with visitation at the Church beginning at 10 a.m. and a memorial mass at 11a.m.

In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made in her memory to the Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Research Foundation (https://www.alzinfo.org/memory-wall/) or The ArcWisconsin (http://www.arcwi.org). The Fisher Center was founded by world renowned scientists and its mission is to attack the scourge of Alzheimer’s disease, improve the care of people living with Alzheimer’s, and find a cure. The Arc promotes and protects the human rights of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and actively supports their full inclusion and participation in the community.

May God's loving kindness and comfort help you and your family through this very sad time Psalms 29:11

Mary Ann loved her family. She was especially generous to the grandchildren when either Green Bay or the University of Wisconsin won a football title. She bought sweatshirts for all the grandkids then. It's a shame her memory was taken from her before she could participate in the graduations of many of the grandchildren. My kids would have loved her sense of humor. I'll remember her for her generosity to my kids. Her support for the Packers. And most of all as a wonderful mother to my wife.
