Margaret Ann Avent Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 2, 2017.

Margaret Ann Newman Avent, 89, of Greensboro, NC, died peacefully in her sleep on April 28, 2017. Born March 3, 1928 in Richmond, VA, she was the daughter of Sydnor C. Newman and Katherine G. Newman of Farmville, VA. She was preceded in death by her parents and her daughter Ginger A. Vukov. She is survived by her husband, the Reverend Lawrence W. Avent of Greensboro, NC; her brother, Sydnor C. Newman, Jr. of Farmville, VA; her daughter, Ashley A. Scholer (John) of Lynchburg, VA; son-in-law, Dr. Gary Vukov (Heidi) of Myrtle Beach, SC; grandchildren, Larry Scholer (Mae) of Washington, DC, Margaret Sydnor Scholer of Cambridge, MA, Bryan Vukov of Myrtle Beach,SC, Ben Vukov of Myrtle Beach, SC; and great-granddaughter, Ashley Scholer of Washington, DC.
Margaret Ann was reared in Farmville, VA. She graduated from Mary Baldwin College, Staunton, VA with a B.A. in English (having been elected "MIss Mary Baldwin" in 1947), and later attended Pan American Business School in Richmond, VA. She and her husband were married in 1952. It was then that she began her life as an energetic and faithful wife of a Presbyterian minister. She devoted herself to homemaking, child-rearing, volunteer service, and being a friend to many by generously giving of her time and talents. She was a tireless church and community worker in the communities where she and her husband served: Providence Forge, VA, Alexandria, VA, High Point, NC, Wilson, NC, Jamestown, NC, and Greensboro, NC. She taught Sunday School, held offices in the Presbyterian Women, worked with the hospital auxiliary guild, delivered Meals on Wheels, worked with the Red Cross Bloodmobile, was a Girl Scout leader, and taught at the Shepherd's Center. A woman of many talents, she also shared her creative, artistic, and writing skills in workshops that were appreciated and enjoyed by many.
Margaret Ann will be remembered for her poise and beauty, her gentle and understanding demeanor, her many kindnesses to the friend as well as to the stranger in her midst, her Christian faith, and her stoicism through times of adversity.
The funeral service will be held at 4:00 P.M. on Tuesday, May 2, 2017, at the First Presbyterian Church, Greensboro, NC. The family asks that those who desire to do so gather in the sanctuary fifteen minutes prior to the service in order to hear the voluntary prelude music played by John Alexander, Organist.
Hanes Lineberry Funeral Home is handling the funeral arrangements. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that memorial donations be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro, 617 N. Elm St., Greensboro, NC 27401.

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. Reverend and Mrs. Avent meant so much to me as a little boy growing up in Wilson. They were the best neighbors and first friends I remember having, and I would love to go over and play at their house. I'm sure I wore out my welcome and was somewhat annoying; however, they were always so gracious. I have many happy memories of Mrs. Avent. May you find comfort with the passing of time.
