James G. Hitchcock was a well-loved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother and friend. Born in Council Bluffs, Iowa in 1928, where he spent the first 4 years of his life. He then moved to Chicago and at the age of 14 he moved to Portland with his family and lived in Milwaukie for a short time, then settled in the Sellwood area.
He worked in the shipyards and as a stock boy prior to beginning his career in the fire safety business, where he spent his time until he retired in 1993. He continued consulting at the shipyards on fire safety. He was a long time member of the Society of Port Engineers in Portland and continued to attend the luncheons as often as he could.
In 1945, Ruth Hutchinson came to Sellwood to visit her aunt and met the boy next door. After getting to know each other they married in 1952 and soon started their family, which grew over the next 15 years. Their children include Joyce Cooper (Hal) of Lake Oswego, Karen Palaganas (Armando) of Guam/Philippines, Shirley Hitchcock of Campbell, CA, Greg Hitchcock of Lake Oswego, Adel Adams (Mike) of Mulino and Nancy Hitchcock of Lake Oswego. They were blessed with 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Jim was a skilled handyman. He loved to work on projects and would help anyone who needed it. From helping with remodeling projects and building houses to maintenance at church, he was always ready and willing to do what he could. In addition, Jim enjoyed working in the yard, watching and feeding the squirrels and birds, spending time with his family and his greatest love was his wife of 64 years, Ruth. Jim will be greatly missed by all that knew him and his memory will live on for years.
A Celebration of Jim's life will be held at River West Church, 2000 Country Club Road, Lake Oswego, on Saturday, May 6, 2017, at 2pm.
Jim will be privately laid to rest in Skyline Memorial Gardens in the garden of the Old Rugged Cross.

I couldn't have hand picked a better man to have as my father! He will be missed more than words can begin to express but he is always with me in my heart and mind.
