When I joined the KFA-NY, I didn't really know Wayne that well. The club was growing fast & he was just another of the many friendly faces at the meetings. When some members decided they wanted to do Kayak Wars they asked on line for other interested members who wanted to join their team. The young guns quickly formed teams 1&2. A few old guys didn't get picked. It was like gym class all over again, so we formed team 3! It was Bob(BJB), Wayne, George M, Walter & myself. We fished together a lot but Wayne always posted, looking to include others & we fished with whoever showed. It was more about having a good time or getting a newbie started, but we still caught enough to keep teams 1&2 motivated! There was never any competition, just a lot of fun fishing & a million one liners on the VHF, most of them from Wayne. We had so much fun & laughs our radio batteries would die! No matter where we fished Wayne would tell us about diving in that area & how the bottom was shaped & where the fish hang on the structure.
Besides jokes, Wayne was always quick to welcome new people & give them tips. He was always coming up with things & gizmos to make things easier. Some he thought of himself, others he saw & modified. Like the PVC fly rod holder, or the rod rack in the garage that was covered up while the door is up so your wife can't see how many rods you have!
One year my cousin's kid met us at Salem, Ma. He lived an hour away, loved fishing, but never fished salt water. He caught a nice bass fishing with us. Wayne said, "Don't worry Ryan, that smile will come off your face in about a week!" At the raffle I won a Cobra Kayak. Ryan was so pumped up about Kayak fishing I gave it to him. Wayne won a set of paddles & said, "What do I need with another set of paddles? Here Tom, give it to the kid!" Another year at Salem, every night skunks would over run the campsite, climbing in kayaks & on tables. Everyone was running! Everyone but Wayne. He decided to feed them! But not by tossing them food, he made them take it from his hands! Then there was the time at Jbay when they needed some guides to take out vets for the first HOW outing on the Island. Team 3 volunteered. I'm listening to Wayne as he's talking to the vets about Vietnam, when & where they served. He was in some heavy stuff over there . At the end of the outing I said "Wayne, I've been fishing & talking with you for years & I had no idea! Your stories blew away their's!"
He told us they found cancer the night we went to visit Walter, who was gravely ill. Since that time he moved out east & we didn't see him as often as before, but when we did he was always upbeat about fighting it.
Last year at Jbay, both his sons fished with him & he was so proud. I was truly hoping to see them there with him again this year. He will be missed is such an understatement, but I don't know what else to say. He was everyone's friend.

How do you say goodbye to your Big Brother? I don't know. I remember when I was young he wouldhelp me with baseball and hockey, thank you. When we were older I wouldwatch him build models and I would learn. Then Uncle Sam called and he went to war, He was so brave and again I would learn. I don't know how many times I wouldcall Wayne to ask about fixing things and with his helpI would learn. Thanks Big Brother. I hope you know you will always be in our hearts . I do know that when Wayne walks up to St. Peter he willwelcome him and stepaside and a big sign will say John Wayne Collins, Welcome Home.

This man was mighty...in his faith, his love for family and friends, his adventurous spirit and humility. Always ready to lend a hand, a joke, or his very self in every hour. Our neighborhood will not be the same...our lives will be missing this selfless soul. Our hearts are broken for his family and especially his wife, Cindy.
Prayers and strength, Love Larry & Flossie
