Minnette Carter passed away May 14th comfortably and quietly to join her Creator and her husband. Minnette was born June 16, 1927 in Marshall, Texas to Mike Harkrider and Ruth Whaley Harkrider. In high school Minnette was a majorette, a talent and energy she later channeled into her adult passions. While at Centenary College in Shreveport, LA, she joined Zeta Tau Alpha sorority and met the love of her life, Thomas H. Carter. After marrying in 1948, they embarbarked on a thirty year journey with the United States Coast Guard, taking them all over the globe. As an officer's wife, Minnette served as President of the Coast Guard Wives Club and accompanied her husband as they hosted Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip in Boston during the Bicentennial. The love of traveling, broadening her talents, and making new friends continued into retirement. Minnette was a member of the Houston Garden Club, associate of the Junior League of Houston, an antique appreciator, a gourmet cook, and dog lover. Her greatest pleasures, however, were spending time with family and friends, telling jokes, and playing bridge.
Minnette was preceded in death by her parents Mike and Ruth Harkrider, her grandparents Eugene Whaley and Minnie Heartsill Whaley, and her husband Capt. Thomas Houston Carter, Sr. (ret). She is survived by her sister Gene Bradford (James), daughter Cynthia Carter Crabtree (Charlie) and son Thomas H. Carter, Jr. (Colleen); her grandchildren, Sean (Lacy), Maura, and Katie Carter; and her great grandchildren, Kayla Pounds and Christopher Quinby; a number of much loved nephews, nieces, cousins; her extended family of traveling companions and bridge partners in Houston; and her beloved companions and her caregivers at Waltonwood of Cary.
A memorial service will be held June 13th in the Independent Living Garden Club room at Waltonwood of Cary, 750 SE Cary Parkway, Cary, NC at 11:00AM. Family will greet friends after the service. Minnette will be buried beside her husband at Arlington National Cemetery.
Condolences can be sent to www.brownwynnecary.com. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to The Employee Fund at Waltonwood of Cary #219 attention: Anthony Dingman, 750 SE Cary Parkway, Cary, NC 27511.

Through the years you shared so much in good and bad times. Some memories make you laugh others you cry but it is the love and kind deeds that will last a life time. When sorrow and pain rears its ugly head turn to God for his loyal love - Psalm 103:8. My mercy to all.

Cindy and Tom,
Audrey and Louis Kariel from Marshall, TX, send their condolences to you and your family. They are sorry for the loss of your mom.
My dad and your mom were classmates, and your parents lived in Marshall when my parents first married. My mom recalls spending a weekend in Houston with your parents, and Jeane and Wes Jones.
Your mom's sister, Jean Harkrider Bradford, was the same age as my aunt - Maurine Kariel Plettman. Her daughter (and my first cousin) Elaine was taking a class at UT and Jean was auditing the class. The minute she saw Elaine she asked if she was related to her childhood friend, Maurine Kariel. Elaine was so surprised, but Jean said she looked exactly like Maurine did at that age.
My parents wanted to let you know that your parents' old friends send their sympathy. She felt very blue today after reading Minnette's obituary even though she has not seen her in years.
