Glynn Austin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 19, 2017.

Glynn Waldon Austin was born on November 19, 1924 in Cross Plains, Texas to James and Vina Ellen Austin. On May 18, 2017 he peacefully went to be with the Lord. Graveside services will be held at 11:00a.m. on May 25th, 2017 at Ross Cemetery in Baird, Texas with Pastor Jeff Reid from Pioneer Drive Baptist Church officiating.
After losing his father at a young age, Glynn's mother raised him alone to be a hardworking Christian man.
At an early age he learned to play the banjo and guitar and played in a band with his two brothers.
Glynn was very kind hearted and loving. He met others with a big smile and a warm hug or handshake. He was very proud of his family and loved to point out pictures of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He was an especially gracious man and always showed his appreciation for even the smallest acts of kindness from others.
In 1947 Glynn married Roxie Northcutt. Together they had three children.
Glynn served in WWII in the US Navy on the battleship USS South Dakota and saw a great deal of action on both sides of the world. After his return to Abilene after an honorable discharge in 1946, Glynn had various jobs from working for Coca Cola, to the Texas Oilfields, to becoming a Postal Letter Carrier.
Glynn married Laverne "Tootsie" Chatham in 1971. They enjoyed spending time with family, doing some traveling, entertaining and supporting the grandchildren, playing card and domino games with friends, and square dancing. Tootsie preceded him in death in 2002. Glynn was a devoted caregiver to his wife during her long illness.
He retired from the US Postal Service in 1986.
Glynn loved the Lord and would spend time reading the Bible and praying for others. He had a servant's heart and before his health regressed, he spent many hours helping those in need. He was a member of Pioneer Drive Baptist Church.
Glynn was a great handyman and worked on many projects throughout his life. Other Hobbies/Interests included reading, of which he had a special interest in the Stan Lynde westerns. He loved to listen to music and dance, and he had a special fondness for going to the coffee shop with family or friends and drinking coffee, eating breakfast, and visiting.
In addition to his wife, he was also preceded in death by his parents, his two brothers, Ralph and Ross Austin, and a son Ray Austin.
Glynn is survived by daughter Glynda Jones of Midwest City, Oklahoma, son Steve Austin of Waco, Texas, Stepson Jim Francisco and wife Teressa of Corinth, Texas, Stepdaughter Dixie Scott and husband John Scott of Lubbock, Texas.
He is also survived by his grandchildren, Jennifer Cunningham, Heather Wells, Desirae Austin, Kendra Carter and husband Kevin, Mike Schwartzkopf, and Jacob Scott, as well as his Great Grandchildren: Seth, Emilee, Nicole, Megan, Brittany, Anthony, Chloe, Brayden, Kesley, Kyleigh, and Kenzington. He was lovingly known as Gran Gran, Grandpa, and Papa Gyn.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to the Care Staff of Grandbrook Memory Care in Grapevine, Texas and to the Anchor of Hope Hospice Staff. Your devoted and tender care is deeply appreciated.
