Joe Gene Bailey, age 83, passed away May 18, 2017. He was born January 12, 1934, in Austin, Texas, to parents John Orrie and Opal Bailey.
After graduating from Austin High School, Joe enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he served his country for 20 years.
Joe retired from the U.S. Air Force as a Senior Master Sergeant, and while there he was bestowed the great honor of serving as the Crew Chief of Air Traffic Control for Air Force One on each visit to the 'Southern White House' in Johnson City during the Lyndon Johnson administration. After the Air Force, he went on to work more than fifteen years for Public Employees Credit Union, where he earned the title of Vice President in the Loan Department. He loved sports and was quite an athlete in baseball, exceling as both a pitcher and first baseman. He played fast-pitch softball in the Air Force, developed a wicked knuckleball and power from the left side of the plate, while leading his teams to World Wide Air Force Championships.
Joe is preceded in death by his parents, and brother, John Edmund Bailey. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Perry Jo Bailey; son, Steven Joe Bailey and wife, Cynthia; grandson Ryan Michael Bailey; brother Ralph Wayne Bailey; as well as many other family members and friends that were always very dear to him.
His family would like to thank the dedicated and professional staff at Brookdale Gaines Ranch for their support, attention, and care to Joe during his six years of residence.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., on Tuesday, May 23, 2017, at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home. I pray for peace and comfort for Perry, Steve, Cindy, and Ryan. "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."
Joe was a caring and thoughtful Uncle. I remember in my youth staying over summers and playing in the swimming pool. Riding on his back when I was scared of the water and he would make motor boat noises to make me laugh. I remember looking out the back glass door and Uncle Joe would point out a deer that was jumping the fence and the family of quail that lived in the backyard that would walk in a line. I am thankful for Joe and Perry giving me my first car. And all the thoughtful things he has done for myself, my mother, and sisters. Always welcoming us into his home. I'll always remember his big smile and joyful laugh.
Aunt Perry you are in my thoughts and prayers and I love you. Love- Barry
