Mary King Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 31, 2017.

Mary Hampton King passed away at the age of 92 in Wilmington, North Carolina.

Mary Hampton was born on January 24, 1925 in Greensboro, North Carolina, where she lived most of her life except for the decade of the 1960s when she lived in Montclair, New Jersey; her last 20 years were in Wilmington, initially at Figure 8 Island, and more recently at The Davis Community.

Her parents were John Logan Scott and Mary Singleton Hampton. She was raised by her loving stepmother, Virginia Hollingsworth Scott, who her father married after the death of Mary Hampton's mother, when Mary Hampton was a young girl. She attended Salem College and later was employed by Burlington Industries.

In 1950 she married Robert Ruffin King III, also of Greensboro, who predeceased her in 1992. After marriage she left work to raise a family.

She is survived by her sister Jacqueline Warwick and her brother-in-law William Warwick of Wilmington. She is also survived by five children, 11 grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Her children are Catherine Scott King of New York, New York, Robert Ruffin King IV (Adelaide) of Charlottesville, Virginia, Pendleton King (Daphne) of Greenwich, Connecticut, Wade Hampton King (Heather) of San Francisco, California, and John Christian King (Suzanne) of Washington, DC.

She was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro. A graveside ceremony will be held 11:00 am Friday at Green Hill Cemetery Greensboro where she will be buried next to her husband.

Mary Hampton was a kind and generous person who was well loved by those who knew her.

The family is very appreciative for the loving care she received during the latter years of her life at Davis Health Care Center in Wilmington.

Anyone wishing to make a memorial donation in honor of Mary Hampton is encouraged to do so to The Davis Community, 1001 Porters Neck Rd., Wilmington, NC 28411; First Presbyterian Church, 617 N. Elm St, Greensboro, NC 27401; or another charity of their choosing.
