Joseph Donald Lanier passed away June 2, 2017. He was 100 years old and was predeceased by his wife of almost 73 years, Anna Salerni Lanier. He was predeceased by his parents, F. Joseph Lanier and Agnes Southwell Lanier, his siblings, Blanche Lanier, Virgie Mae Deal, Lee Marvin Lanier, and Ollie Crawford. He leaves two sons, Wayne Donald Lanier (spouse Rhonda Phillips Lanier) and Lee M. Lanier (spouse Margaret Miller Lanier). His grandchildren are Donald N. Lanier, Linda Lanier Long, Gregory Lanier, David Lanier, and Meredith Lanier. He has seven great grandchildren.
He was born in Pembroke, GA in 1916, the youngest of five children. In 1934, he joined the Marine Corps and said it was the most carefree time of his life. He was discharged in Charleston, SC and married in December, 1938. He worked several jobs before being employed by the Charleston Naval Shipyard as a Helper. From there he rose to the position of Group Superintendent and was responsible for five shops and over 5,000 workers. After retiring at 57, Donald kept busy doing many things including gardening, refinishing furniture, golfing, taking part in community affairs, and spending time with his family.
The family will receive friends at the Carolina Funeral Home, North Charleston, SC on Thursday June 8 from 6:00 PM until 7:30 PM. Funeral services will be Friday June 9,2017 at 11:00 AM in the Carolina Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Riverview Memorial Park. For friends who wish, the family suggests memorial donations to Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd, Tallahassee, FL 32308-5428, the Yeamans Park Presbyterian Church, 5931 Murray Ave., Hanahan, SC 29410, or a charity of your choice, in lieu of flowers.
