James R. Thorp, age 91, passed away on June 13, 2017. James was born March 22, 1926 in Independence, MO the son of Otto A. and Mattie A. Thorp. James married Mary J. (Cotter) Thorp. They were married over 65 years before her passing in 2013. James served his country in the United States Army. He served in Rhineland central Europe. James was a clerk typist and a riffle marksman. He was in the 113th Calvary. He enjoyed telling stories of his time in the war especially his time in the tanks.
He received Army of Occupation Medal, American Theater Ribbon, EAMET Ribbon, Victory Ribbon and Good Conduct Medal. James was a mason belonging to the Masonic lodge in Independence. He was also involved with boy scouts and helping his son and grandson become an Eagle Scout. James was employed at Agco Company for many years until his retirement in 1992. In addition to his wife Mary, James was preceded in death by 6 siblings and his son, David W. Thorp. He is survived by his daughter Donna Walter (Rodney); 4 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Monday, June 19, 2017 from 11 am until service time at 12 pm. Burial at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to American Alzheimer’s Association.
