Robert Harrison Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 21, 2017.

We say goodbye to Bob who died on June 20 at the young age of 91. Bob was the son of the late Gertrude and Lt. Colonel Robert G. Harrison.

He was preceded in death by his wonderful wife, Simone Legrand Harrison. Bob and Simone were the proud parents of David (Rhonda), Ann (David), Faye (John), and Susan (Randy) plus numerous grand and great grandchildren.

Our friend enjoyed an interesting life starting off by being born in New Orleans and growing up in the Carrollton section. In 1935-1937 Bob lived with his parents in Manila, Philippine Islands. Bob graduated from Fortier High School in 1943. He proudly served during WWII in the 89th Infantry Division and saw extensive combat in Germany. In 1978, at the age of 53, Bob took up running. He ran in many 5K's, 10K's, half marathons and 5 full marathons - the last one being across the Causeway.

During that same period of time he started writing poetry, going to poetry readings at the "Leaf" on Oak Street. His personal favorites were his poems "Where Be God and What He Do All Day", "The Final Opus", and "You Were Gone", written some

months after his wife, Simone, passed away. Bob loved the Tigers and was a big Saints fan. He enjoyed drinks with his friends at The Fantastic Bar, Kings Cabaret, Norby's and The Lamp Lighter. For the past 14 years Bob resided at The Whitney Place Condominium, served on their Board of Directors and as President of the Condo Association for 5 years. Bob had his ups and

downs, some regrets, but did his best and enjoyed the ride. His family would like to thank his dedicated sitters needed in the last couple of months of his life, Ernestine, Rayenaye, Glenda and Cheri. A special thank you to his dear friend Linda.

Bob asked of things to do in his memory: pet a cat, pat a dog, feed the birds and ducks in City Park, treat some old gal or guy to a drink, check your attitude and start working on your "Random Acts of Kindness" list.

Bob will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

There will be a private service for family.

Bob and my father Ardie Wickers were best friends during WWII, assigned to the 1st Battalion, 354th Infantry Regiment, 89th Infantry Division (The Rolling W). They stayed in touch after the war and I remember them speaking every year on the phone when I was growing up, as well as hearing stories of their service. My father predeceased Bob, but I want whoever reads this to know how important Bob was to my father. They were truly brothers in arms with a bond forged in combat.

Grandchild

Savannah Marcello

My Grandpapa was one of the most caring and loving person I knew. Without him, I would not be the person I am today. He was a teacher of love and compassion. I will always remember waked into his apartment being invited with the sound of classical music and the view of him sitting in his green rocking chair reading the newspaper. He was so strong and he loved everyone so much. Everyone who knew him will always have positive thoughts about him. I miss and love him so much.

Bob was a dear friend. At Whitney Place, I feel he will be remembered as always being available and able to help and assist his many neighbors in need. He extended his time, energy, and heart towards making our world a better place. A gentle sole, often hidden behind a glass. I'll miss seeing him. Thank you for the clown.
